15 miles east of Woodfords, California and 15 miles south of Gardnerville, Nevada a 750 acre fire is burning as of 6:30pm, Saturday July 3rd, 2021. This information was released by the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest Fire Information Team.
“This afternoon a storm cell passed over the area of the #EastForkFire. Strong winds caused the fire to become active on all sides. Although retardant and handlines on the northern and western edges of the fire held the fire through the wind event today, the fire moved further east up the Carson River corridor. Additional crews and overhead support are expected to arrive tomorrow…
The fire, ignited by lightning on Thursday July, 1 is burning in the steep rugged terrain of Cottonwood Canyon near Horseshoe Bend on the East Fork of the Carson River.
Firefighters are expected to be on scene through the weekend. Please stay out of the area of Horseshoe Bend on the East Fork of the Carson River, where firefighters are working.”
Per Don Zirbel of Eastern Sierra Fire & Ice, another fire is currently active as of 6pm on July 3rd “on the east side of the Sweetwaters north of Bridgeport, 2 miles southeast of Wheeler Peak… Fire has grown to approximately 45 acres. Two helicopters and approximately 20 firefighters are on scene. The fire spread has been checked by fire retardant and crews on the ground are building containment lines around it.”
Residents in Mason Valley are experiencing the effects of the smoke from these fires as the wind blows in from the west and from the southwest.
