BLM is proposing to sell over 2,062 acres of public land within and around the Anaconda Copper Mine Superfund site for free, including all of the mineral estate and mineral values, to Atlantic Richfield Company (ARC). This would remove an important level of public oversight.
On July 16 2026, the U.S. District Court in Reno, Nevada issued an injunction, preventing the federal government’s sale of over 2,062 acres of public lands and minerals to a multi-national company, ruling that the federal Interior Department’s (Bureau of Land Management) proposed sale violated numerous federal laws designed to protect the public interest. The injunction was requested by Great Basin Resource Watch (GBRW), Prayer Horse Inc. (PHI) and Taboosi Dikudu NO’Obatu Numma Cooperative (TDNONC). The sale was slated to occur any time after July 27, 2026.
