Lyon County NV – July 11, 2026
Our booking sheet covering last week included the criminal charge of mayhem; several questions and a few interesting comments came into our Facebook feed regarding the criminal charge of mayhem and what it means.
The legal definition in Nevada is not the same as the Allstate Insurance commercial’s definition of mayhem. The state of Nevada punishes mayhem severely. Key aspects of this statute include:
Statutory Definition: Under NRS 200.280, the offense involves the intentional and unlawful disabling or disfiguring of specific parts of another person’s body, such as the face, head, or limbs.
Classification and Penalty: Mayhem is classified as a Category B felony. A conviction carries a potential sentence of 2 to 10 years in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Legal Standard: The prosecution focuses on the resulting injury and the intent behind the act rather than the specific method used to cause the harm.
Without getting into details on the mayhem arrest last week, I will say the injury inflicted is accurately described in the criminal statute.
Over the 4th of July weekend, our Sheriff’s Traffic Enforcement Team (STET) ran a saturation operation throughout Lyon County. That operation produced the following statistics:
– 221 traffic stops
– 9 DUI arrests (15 for the week)
– 2 warrant arrests
– Numerous citations for:
– Basic Speed, criminal speed, open container (alcohol and marijuana), reckless driving, suspended licenses, expired registration, and fictitious temporary tags.
We’re finding many fake temporary tags being made and sold locally in our communities. Our traffic enforcement team will begin towing any vehicle caught operating with fictitious temporary registration; the majority of the time, the driver of the vehicle is also operating without insurance.
Overall, the 4th of July operation throughout Lyon County was successful; the community celebrated our Country’s 250th birthday with little incident!

Respectfully,
Sheriff Brad Pope
