Happy Friday Yerington community!

I hope everybody had a great time out at the Lyon County Fair & Rodeo & Livestock show this past weekend. What an incredible year. Between the rain, sunshine and everything in between that Mother Nature threw our way, the hard working volunteers who put on this event never waivered. I’d like to thank every one of them for continuing to serve our community in such a wonderful way.

While at the fair, I had the opportunity to speak with a gentleman and his wife who just moved to Yerington. They couldn’t believe the warmth and wholesomeness that our community provides.

That is a credit to all of you in our community that make up our identity. I suppose this in itself is a reminder that even as times change and communities evolve, our identity as a community is based on us, the people and how we conduct ourselves from day to day.

Last weekend, we also hosted a rock crawling event at Farmy’s Off-Road Park (aka Y-Hill) for W.E. Rock Events. This was a last minute change to accommodate an event that was scheduled for the Moon Rocks in Reno, but had to relocate due to the fires in the area. I heard nothing but compliments from this crew about the great potential in our off-road park in development. This group also worked hard to amend their schedules to compliment the Fair and Rodeo events instead of competing for their audience. This is probably a good time to remind you that VORRA is back in town this weekend as well! This is their Stomping Grounds 300 event, which brings quite a few outdoor enthusiasts to our town every year! We wish them well while they are here this weekend.

If your house is suddenly more quiet than it was two days ago, it’s likely because your kids went back to school on Thursday! In preparation of the new school year, your Public Works crew was busy freshening up the school zones. There are two new crosswalks near the main entrance of YHS, to compliment their new single point of entry plan for better security of our kiddos.

Your Yerington NV Police Department, in partnership with the Safe Routes to School programs would like to remind the public of the 15 mph speed limit in school zones, and also no u-turns, and no passing. If you’re unsure about traffic laws, please err on the side of caution when it comes to our kids.

We are in discussion with the Safe Routes to School program to launch a fun event for our kids in the spring, so expect to hear more about this after the new year. It should be a lot of fun and will address safety, especially for e-scooters as they become more prominent amongst the kids.

We still have two job openings with the City right now. A part time Deputy Clerk position, which works out of City Hall, and a full time Police Officer position with YPD. Next week, road repairs on Pizen Switch Road (between Subway and the Car Wash) should get underway. Repairs will be broken into three phases to allow some use of this road during repairs, but may be somewhat limited. If you park in this area to utilize transport to USA Parkway, or otherwise use this road, plan to give yourself an extra couple of minutes just in case.

This coming Monday is our next regular City Council Meeting. We have changed the start time of this meeting from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to offer an opportunity for members of the public to participate, who may otherwise not have the opportunity to attend in person(or on zoom). Be sure to come check it out Monday evening if you’re curious. I don’t offer popcorn or refreshments, and I have a terrible singing/speaking voice, but I do my best.

You’ll notice on the agenda we’re going to spend a lot of time talking about policies to consider, so bring your own popcorn.
