Alright, we need to make a couple of things clear right out of the gate: At tonight’s YHS Football game:
WE STAND UP FOR THE KICKOFF.
WHEN WE’RE ON DEFENSE, GET LOUD ON THIRD DOWN.
WHEN YOU HEAR “THAT’S GOOD FOR ANOTHER…” WE YELL “FIRST DOWN!”
AND ALL YHS ALUM- STAND FOR THE SCHOOL SONG!
Today is a blackout game day for YHS sports! Volleyball and football are in action today. Let’s show these other communities how proud we are to be YHS Lions!
Now that we know the house rules, let’s talk some Community Updates.
Work to repair Pizen Switch Rd (between Subway and the carwash) has been completed and that area is open to regular traffic again. Repairs along S. West St. near Ace Hardware and the DMV are still underway and will likely take through next week.
Our Pot-Hole 2026-Marathon also continued this week patching needed repairs along several streets, including portions of Reyes Way, Oregon St., and others.
We keep a running list of streets/sidewalks in need of repair, but if you’d like to be sure a particular area of concern is on our list, please forward it to us at jerryb@yerington.net.
While not a city road, I’m happy to report that NDOT is currently working to collect bids on repairs to 95A from just past the airport heading east towards Bonanza. The timeline for this repair will be subject to the bid selection and the contractor selected. As we know more, we will be sure to help communicate to our community members so we can plan our commutes around these repairs.
Be sure to mark your calendar for the morning of Sunday September 13. Yerington NV Main Street Committee is hitting the streets at 9 a.m. for another cleanup. If you’d like to jump in with these volunteers, come ready at 9 a.m. to City Hall, and you’re always encouraged to bring shovels, brooms and rakes to pitch in and keep our community looking sharp.
Happening September 14 at City Hall (6:00 p.m.) is the dedication of the 250th Anniversary Mural. This grant funded mural pays tribute to our Nevada traditions and elements. It’s a wonderful way to honor our heritage and community spirit. I’ll attach a flyer for more information. Public attendance is encouraged and welcomed!
Our long awaited install of AWOS III at the Yerington Airport is scheduled to get underway on September 14. This is an all weather alert system that pilots can certainly appreciate. This device provides continuous, real-time meteorological updates for increased safety. This helps enable precise landing and takeoff data. These type of grant funded upgrades are critical to the future economic success of our city.
Speaking of the airport, come join us on Saturday, September 26 from 7 a.m. to noon for the 2026 Air Fair! Battle Born Medevac will have a helicopter on display for you to see, the Fire Department will have a fire engine on display, YPD will be out with activities for the kiddos and we have several pilots lined up to bring planes in and out that morning. Be sure to also have breakfast with your local Rotary Club of Yerington,. Rotary has committed the first $1,500 of their pancake breakfast fundraiser will be donated back to the local AYSO soccer program. This is a great event all around. Show up early and come hungry!
City staff has been very busy working on plans for our future including housing solutions. Like many growing communities, our housing supply is extremely tight. My most recent statistics from over a year ago show that our vacancy rate of just over one percent and I think we could argue that this small number would be smaller if measured today. As such, our staff has been taking action to actively plan and pursue housing solutions and developments that support our residents and long term character and health of our community. Another good sign in this direction is our increase of new home plan reviews.
Another item staff has been actively working on are park improvements. Our pickleball friends worked with our city and other organizations to help acquire funds to improve our tennis court located in the Joe Parr Sports Complex. This work should be starting in just a couple of weeks to improve and resurface our currently unusable tennis court. There are other plans in the works to enhance our parks, but until they see board approvals, it’s premature to get too far into detail, but keep an eye out for some upcoming agendas for updates in this area.
With that, I’m going to cut it short and change into some black and purple to get to tonight’s football game. I hope to see you there!
