February 28, 2025 – From Chief Deputy Mitch Brantingham:
As winter comes to an end, many people around the region will begin spring cleaning. At the Sheriff’s Office, we have started spring cleaning also. Internally, this process has included an inventory of evidence vaults, equipment inventories and a budget analysis. In the community, the warmer weather means our inmate work crews will start being utilized more frequently.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office utilizes inmate work crews throughout the county to help cleanup public property that is in need of weed removal, trash clean up or other beautification processes. The inmates are selected based on strict legal criteria and have expressed a desire to participate in the crews.
Projects must be on public property for several different reasons but can be for a variety of purposes. Some of the prior inmate work crews have worked cleaning weeds off of roadway easements, picking up trash at parks, and assisting with the ground preparations for the county fair. The crews participated in last year’s Mayor’s Clean Sweep and assisted with the cleanup of the Bureau of Reclamation property next to the Veteran’s Cemetery here in Fernley.

If you know of a public property or area that could use some attention, please contact your City Councilman or the Sheriff’s Office so we can evaluate the situation for a work crew.
