A Colorful Palette with Something for Everyone: Sylvia’s Quilter’s Quarters

~Written & photographed by Leah Wilkinson~

Yesterday three friends travelled from Dayton for their monthly trip to Sylvia’s Quilters Quarters in Yerington. I met them at the shop prior to our planned get together at El Superior for lunch.

Owner Sylvia Milam greeted Judy, Sharon, and Kathy as if they were long time friends. And shop employee Rachella Beeks assured us all that she could assist whenever we were ready, meanwhile returning to a giant ironing board, with the biggest iron I’d ever seen, smoothing out a sheet-sized colorful fabric in the project room.

There were so many eye-catching items: unique handmade purses, quilts, wall-hangings, hats, cash-stashes, espresso ornament fabric kits, and more.

While I have not sewn for many years, this did not deter me: beautiful bolts of cloth for table settings, wall hangings, curtains, and more were available to the novice with only a pair of scissors.

Sylvia also offers classes for those novices who would like to learn more about  quilting and “all things fabric”. Frequently after Ace Hardware and El Superior Restaurant have closed for the day, the parking lot is full of the cars belonging to Sylvia’s patrons who participate in the sewing courses that have a dash of socializing added.

Business cards from locals are available to customers who have sewing, embroidery, quilting and framing needs.

Stop by and check out Sylvia’s Christmas Cactus that are in bloom with several colors: white, peach, red and fuchsia…another one of her colorful palettes.
