Lyon County schools will be back in session, starting Thursday, August 20th. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reminds students, parents, and staff that our School Resource Officers will continue to operate under the zero-tolerance policy (Original attached) established in partnership with the Lyon County School District in 2023. It is the stance of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office that schools are not a sanctuary for criminal activity; prior to 2023, crimes committed on school grounds rarely saw any response from law enforcement.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has taken a much more active role in suppressing crimes in the schools, at the same time maintaining positive relationships with the students who attend. This has led to a more positive learning environment; the number of students who reach out regarding their positive relationships with our SRO’s has been outstanding. These relationships help break down barriers between our youth and law enforcement, leading to safer communities.

With school being back in session, here are some safety tips for the upcoming school year:

School Bus Safety

• Keep a safe distance: Drivers must stop in both directions when a school bus shows red flashing lights and an extended stop sign.

• The danger zone: Teach children to stay at least 10 feet (about three giant steps) away from the bus while waiting and when getting on or off.

• Cross in front: If children must cross the street near a bus, they should walk about 10 feet in front of the bus and make eye contact with the driver first.

Walking and Biking

• Use sidewalks: Walk on available sidewalks; if there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.

• Helmet rule: Bicyclists must always wear a correctly fitted helmet.

• Ride with traffic: Bikes should ride on the right side of the road in a single file, following the same direction as auto traffic.

Driving in School Zones

• Slow down: Obey reduced speed limits in school zones where fines for speeding are often doubled.

• Eliminate distractions: Put phones away and avoid texting or calling while navigating school drop-off and pickup areas.

• Watch for guards: Yield to crossing guards and watch out for unpredictable children near crosswalks.

The Sheriff’s Traffic Enforcement Team will be conducting operations in school zones to maintain safety in our school zones. Several operations involving school bus safety and ensuring vehicles are stopping for school buses are planned during the school year. We are looking forward to a safe 206-27 school year.
