Message of the Week 12/12/2025
Tomorrow is the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office annual Shop with a Sheriff event! This year, many community members and donors have generously contributed substantial donations to us. Due to the amount of money we have raised, we will be able to provide a Christmas to fifty-two (52) children from all around Lyon County. This is the largest number of children we have been able to accept in the program’s history! We will be listing all our donors, along with pictures of the event, shortly after Shop with a Sheriff takes place.

Before Shop with a Sheriff, another important event is taking place in Fernley, at the Veterans’ Cemetery. Wreaths Across America begins at 9:00 AM. Join the more than two million volunteers(across the Country, not in Fernley) and supporters who will gather to Remember, Honor, and Teach at more than 5,200 participating locations in all 50 states, at sea, and abroad. Members of the Sheriff’s Office will participate, placing wreaths on loved ones ‘ and former co-workers’ graves. It is an honor to participate and to remember those who served our country.
Winter weather and driving may finally arrive.
Driving Techniques
Slow Down: Adjust speed for reduced traction; it takes much longer
to stop.
Increase Distance: Give yourself 5-10 seconds of space from the car
in front.
Gentle Inputs: Accelerate, brake, and steer slowly and smoothly to avoid skids.
No Cruise Control: Never use it on slippery roads.
Brake Smart: Press brakes gently; if you have ABS, apply firm, steady pressure; if not, pump lightly.
Handle Skids: Steer in the direction of the skid, ease off the gas, and gently straighten the wheel as traction returns.
Hills: Gain momentum before a hill and maintain a steady, low speed; don’t power up.
Bridges & Overpasses: Be extra cautious as they freeze first.
Vehicle & Personal Prep:
Clear Snow: Remove all snow from your car, including roof and lights.
Warm-Up (Briefly): Start car 10-15 mins before, but modern cars don’t need long idling for lubrication.
Tires: Ensure proper inflation; consider winter tires below 45°F.
Emergency Kit: Pack shovel, ice scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, blankets, food, water, & phone charger.
Stay safe, and enjoy the Christmas season!!

Respectfully,
Sheriff Brad Pope
