Sheriff Pope’s Message of the Week on October 9, 2026

Lyon County NV – October 9, 2026

Fall is upon us, maybe not temperature-wise(yet), but it is starting to get dark earlier and earlier every day. Longer evenings and nights give more opportunities to criminals to move around undetected in our neighborhoods.

Law enforcement cannot be everywhere at once. One of the most important tools we have in keeping our communities safe is an engaged and observant community. If you see something that doesn’t look right, don’t simply assume someone else will report it. The appropriate way to report it is by calling dispatch @ 775-463-6620. Too often, people post suspicious activity or reckless driving on social media pages, rather than calling dispatch. You can remain anonymous during the call.

Suspicious activity can take many forms. It could be someone checking vehicle door handles late at night, an unfamiliar person attempting to enter a closed business, a vehicle repeatedly driving through a neighborhood, or someone acting in a way that causes you concern. That doesn’t necessarily mean a crime has occurred. It simply means it may be worth reporting and a Deputy investigating.

When you call the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, our dispatchers and deputies can evaluate the information and determine the appropriate response. A citizen’s call may provide the information we need to prevent a crime, locate a suspect, or help solve a crime that has already occurred.

If you see something suspicious, be a good witness. Pay attention to what you see, where it is happening, the direction someone is traveling, vehicle descriptions, license plates, and other details that may help deputies. Do not put yourself in danger or confront someone you believe may be involved in criminal activity. When in doubt, report it and let law enforcement make the determination.

Public safety is a partnership. We have made great progress in establishing and maintaining a partnership with our communities. Our deputies, dispatchers, and investigators are committed to protecting Lyon County, but we are stronger when our citizens are willing to assist.

If you see something suspicious, say something.

Respectfully,
Sheriff Brad Pope
