Yerington NV – October 2, 2026

Good evening Yerington community!

It’s time for the YHS Homecoming Football game in a little bit. I hope to see you all there tonight.

I’d also like to say congratulations to all of the members being inducted into the YHS Football Hall of Fame! That ceremony is happening as I write this. (I’m sorry I didn’t get out of the office in time to attend!)

Tomorrow at 2 p.m. is the 7th Annual Josh Farler Helping Hands Foundation Wine and Whiskey Walk. This is a wonderful, fun annual event, and the foundation does an incredible job supporting members of our community when they need support the most. Please make plans to attend and support this cause.

Happening Sunday is a Mural Walk, hosted by Mason Valley Physical Therapy and the Yerington Chamber of Commerce. With all of the recent additions of murals to our community, this really seems like a great idea and gets people out and moving!

Next Wednesday, October 7 is the Career & Volunteer Fair, happening at Yerington City Hall, organized again by our Chamber of Commerce.

Yerington Elementary School is having their fall family night October 14 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at their Multi-Purpose Room.

On October 15 make plans to meet some of your election candidates at City Hall. This event is from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Again organized by the Chamber of Commerce. Are you noticing a theme? The Chamber of Commerce has been extremely busy!

Also October 15 at the Yerington Library (Lyon County Libraries) is a free showing of Hocus Pocus with popcorn!

October 17 is the Beef ‘n Brews First Responders Benefit. This event raises funds that support our local first responders and is a lot of fun with home brew competition and dinner.

Last event I’ll mention before some city business is the Trunk or Treat event. Previously two trunk or treats were held at the Boys and Girls Club and City Hall.

This is now ONE event, happening Wednesday, October 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Main Street, right outside of the Boys and Girls Club. Sign up at City Hall to participate. You can stop by, call or email crystalb@yerington.net to sign up to participate.

Now that I’ve gotten all of that out of my system, be sure to watch the Chamber of Commerce Community Calendar for upcoming events. There is a lot of activity almost every weekend!

Now some city business. What I’ll lead with is that our City Council recently passed some projects to kick start some RV and Mobile home improvements. This is an effort to offer relief where there is a need for workforce housing. There are other development plans in review phases at the moment for other housing needs, so please keep an eye out for future agendas for more information. Housing has been a critical need in our valley for several years and it appears to be getting tighter by the day. We are aware of this need and working hard to produce reasonable solutions to address it. As mentioned in a recent conversation with a developer, we want to be accommodating to development, but we also have a responsibility to the long term health of our community to ensure it’s in the best interest of our residents. Our next Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for October 28 at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall.

Another hot topic lately has been the safety of traffic through the intersection of Goldfield Ave. and Main St. Regarding this intersection, there are engineered plans out to bid, that would introduce more lighting to this intersection, improving visibility at night. This project is being led by NDOT and when complete will offer both safety benefits and visual improvements to the intersection. This project also calls for improvements to the highway leaving town along 95a heading east. Once we have tentative dates of these improvements coming I’ll be sure to share.

I had great meetings this week with representatives from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. We discussed an array of items, but the majority of our discussion focused on housing solutions and attracting responsible industry to our city. Any solutions we discuss are always long term plans. There are no over night fixes. However, these discussions are where we lay the groundwork for diversifying our economic landscape in Yerington. The ultimate goal is to provide more career opportunities, anchor employers and improve the tax base for our city. I haven’t been shy about the fact that our financial outlook has been trending the wrong direction in recent years, and it may take several more years to correct it’s course,. In fact, recent reports of how many of our working class from Yerington are commuting out of town for employment are alarming. Our goal is to bring many more of those career opportunities here locally.

This might seem like an abrupt stop, because it is, but it’s 6:45 p.m. and I have a Homecoming game to get to. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me directly at jerryb@yerington.net.

See you at the game. GO LIONS!
