Yerington NV – July 24, 2026
I’m starting this Community Update with a little different tone than my usual leading paragraph. This is due to a great moment last Friday that helped “recharge me” mentally.
Last Friday, I was able to take a few minutes to sit down at Hometown Coffee with a good friend and catch up in conversation. While there, this friend surprised me with a modest but very impactful gift. A porcelain display that reads “What Good Shall I Do This Day?”
I needed that.
It was a nice reminder that every single one of us has a decision to make every day. What do we want our day to be worth when it’s over? There is always an end result to what we do each day and we all (knowingly or unknowingly) make decisions along the way that shape that end result.
I have the display in my office where I can start each day reminding myself of the impact we can have. I don’t know if my friend knew that I needed this, but I’d like to thank them again and share the gift with each of you to help remind each of us how great our days can be when we chose to make it so.
With that said, let’s review some City events and business!
Tomorrow (July 25) is the annual Lavender Days event! I attended this event last year and was thoroughly impressed. The size of the event has outgrown our City Hall facilities, so they had to move it to the Fairgrounds this year. With the growth we have seen in this spectacular, wholesome event I’m happy to encourage all to go pay them a visit tomorrow between10:00 a.m. and 4 p.m.
If you have stepped outside at all, I’m sure you also noticed this weekend is the 25th year of Night in the Country! This festival kicked off this past Wednesday and the music started rocking on Thursday. I say rocking because I’m not sure how to say “country-ing.” I was fortunate to take in some of the music last night while starting my volunteer shift and had a great time.
The mass exodus of pickups and campers is on Sunday, so expect some traffic along 95a, Goldfield and 339 that day and plan accordingly. Be sure to drive accordingly, or you may get to meet one of our wonderful officers from the Yerington NV Police Department! I always encourage you to get to know them, but maybe under different circumstances than a traffic stop! YPD is out in force this weekend in support of the extra activity in town so be sure to say hello.
A few of the photos I’m sharing in this post are of more beautification projects that are still underway. The first is the Rotary Clock and the arch over the Litell St. gateway. I’d like to thank the Yerington NV Main Street Committee for organizing and kicking off these projects, and Gavin Draper for finalizing the details on the Rotary Clock. I encourage you stop by and look at the fine detail of gold accent on the clock to truly appreciate how detailed this project was. Great job to all involved!
The other beautification project underway is the progress made with the patriotic mural on the west side of City Hall. Local artist Stephanie LaBranch is making great time on this with incredible attention to detail. You’ll notice a nice theme of Nevada State symbols throughout the detail of this wonderful mural. It is nearing completion so please join me in recognizing Stephanie and her incredible work.
I’ve posted a lot about streets in recent updates and today I’d like to mention that we have submitted for additional grant funds for what is called the Safe Streets 4 All grant. The purpose of this grant is to help us improve our roadways and their safety aspects, especially in sensitive areas, like our schools, or higher risk intersections. We should find out in the next few months if these efforts are successful, and if they are, we begin by developing more engineering (which means studies) to prepare the long term solution to these trouble spots. We also have an item on Monday’s public meeting agenda to repair some pretty bad spots near Subway and the Carwash in town. I wish we had the funds to repair all of the bad spots around town, but we are working the plan to get through as many of them as we can without going broke in our road fund. I’m also happy to report that our recent engagements with NDOT have been very productive and we continue advocating for solutions in some of these hot spots and they are actively engaged in the discussions to find solutions with us. Kudos to NDOT and their responsiveness to our concerns. I’ll provide a more thorough update on this matter in the near future.
Coming up on Monday is our next regular scheduled City Council meeting. It starts off at 10:00 a.m. at City Hall and zoom is always an option. In fact, we have made some improvements to our zoom setup and I’m happy to try them out this meeting for improved communication and transparency. These improvements should also better position us to set up a YouTube (or similar platform) channel to host video recordings of the meetings. Before I get too far ahead of myself, I’d like to get through a few meetings and ensure that these upgrades we’ve made provide sufficient video recordings, after which, we will be very happy to begin making them available online. This is probably a good time to thank Frank “Kiko” Ruiz for all of his help in improving this zoom set up for us. Frank wears many hats for us at City Hall.
One of his most underappreciated skills is the ability to fix things like this that otherwise make me fill up my swear jar quickly!
