Letter to the Editor: Two Lessons from Recent Political Races

Two lessons may be gotten from recent political races in Lyon county.  First, in this county it appears money cannot buy an election.  Two candidates of means, who seem to have expended more than a little capital on their campaigns, were nevertheless unsuccessful in their races.  Second, online arguing and personal attacks probably cost votes, not earned them.  Having door knocked for three successful candidates, I talked to a few hundred Lyon county voters.  None reported being swayed by heated social media dialog.  My impression is that Lyon county voters are swayed by candidates who raise issues important to them, who try to keep it positive, and also by party affiliation.
