Community Roots has Mother’s Day Gifts & Tips for Spring Gardening

Dayton NV – May 4, 2026

Community Roots and Shoots nursery and garden boutique offers many possibilities for the perfect gift for Mother’s Day.

For instance, the outdoor nursery space has an abundance of roses, including yellow, pink and purple shades of wild rose (rugosa), a variety that does well in more exposed locations with lots of space. They’re more drought tolerant compared to floribunda and tea roses.

Gift Shop/ Garden Boutique: Inside Community Roots’ garden boutique/ gift shop, you’ll find seasonal displays that highlight the shop’s verified Fair Trade treasures like tea from Kenya and handbags and bird houses from Nepal, made with natural sheep’s wool.

The boutique also offers locally made delights like honey, soap, lotion, candles, jewelry, gift cards, books by local authors, and more.

Looking for bird seed and bird feeders? Community Roots has large wreaths made with bird seed suet, bird feeders, and bird houses, as well as bagged bird seed. During spring, the songbirds will appreciate some good food too.

Planting tips:  “The weather may still be a little unsettled until the end of May, but home gardeners can watch the weather and plan accordingly,” says Morigan Albatraoz, Community Roots Garden and Nutrition Advisor. “If you have frost cloth, a greenhouse/hoophouse, a water teepee (Wall O’Water) or row cover hoops, you can begin planting warm season crops like tomatoes, peppers, melons, cucumbers and squash, and tender flowering annuals early in May. Amend soil with compost when planting if you didn’t have time to amend in preparation earlier in the season.”

In addition to typical vegetable, herb and flower seed varieties, Community Roots also has seeds ideal for container or patio gardening. Container-friendly seeds are specifically selected or bred to be compact, dwarf, or bushy to thrive in restricted root spaces. The nursery carries many sizes of colorful pots for your plants, as well as potting soil.

The nursery also has a selection of shrubs and trees, including fruit trees, as well as berries. A recent delivery included huckleberries, loganberries, marionberries, and currants in addition to blueberries, blackberries, pink blueberries and pink flowering strawberries.

Community Roots and Shoots is a self-sustaining nonprofit, part of Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties. Proceeds help support community programs.
