December 9, 2024 – 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Yerington, 560 Aftershocks Later

Kyren Bogolub from the University of Nevada, Reno Seismological Lab presented an informative PowerPoint at the regularly scheduled Lyon County Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meeting on January 15, 2025.

Kyren reported that the 5.7 magnitude earthquake (Main Shock) in North Northeastern Mason Valley, Nevada on December 9, 2024 has been named the Parker Butte Quake  .

4 temporary aftershock stations have been placed by the Nevada Seismological Lab at and around the area of the Main Shock. These stations have recorded 560 aftershocks (PowerPoint slide 9) in the area of the Main Shock/Parker Butte Quake and that “Most of the earthquakes are not aligning well with known faults!” (slide 12)

Kyren reported that while Washington State, Oregon and California have access to ‘ShakeAlert’ technology through federal government monitoring stations & funding, Nevada does not. Nevada’s earthquake stations are placed and monitored through the Nevada Seismological Lab at the University of Nevada, Reno. Some Nevada residents who live within 20 miles of the California border may have access to ‘ShakeAlert’ due to their geographical proximity.
