Elsie Brower passed away peacefully, on November 14, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was 88.
Elsie was born on January 21, 1936 in Yerington Nevada to Joe and Julia Carlos. Upon her mother’s death when Elsie was small child she was raised by Albert and Wilma Silva on the Silva Dairy in Mason Valley Nevada. She attended Yerington schools through the 11th grade and then her family moved to San Jose California. She completed High School in San Jose and went on to San Jose State College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
Elsie met her husband, Orlan Brower, while he was stationed at Moffet Field Naval base. They married on February 2, 1959 in San Jose. During Orlan’s carrier in the Navy they were stationed in Hawaii, Florida and 3 times in California. After Orlan’s retirement from the Navy they relocated to Yerington, Nevada. Elsie owned and operated the “Stitch in Time” fabric store in Yerington for a few years and then went back to teaching. She taught school for 30 years, mainly 7th and 8th grade reading and English but also taught various Elementary School grades. She retired from teaching in 1995 from Yerington Intermediate School.
She was a member of many community organizations including PEO, Yerington Portuguese Organization and was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church. During her retirement she hosted 2 foreign exchange students, Amiee from Montreal and Latitia from Belgium. She traveled the United States, Europe and Canada, many of those trips with her best friend Ann Marie Gable. They were quite the pair and took good care of each other while traveling and while at home for many years.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Orlan, siblings Joe, Al, Mary Carlos, Ed and Vaughn Silva. She is survived by her children Julie Gibbs, Susan Brower, Mathew (Sara) Brower, Grandchildren Adam Gibbs, Jennifer Houghton, Scott Brower and Meghann Kneeland. She is great grandmother (Gammy) to Riley, Emma, Hunter, Amelia, Carley and Bo.
A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday, November 22, 2024 at 11:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Yerington Nevada. A Rosary will proceed the mass at 10:30 am. Burial will be in the family plot at Valley View Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to sign her online guest book at www.FRFH.net
