The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office utilizes social media, to reach out to the community and to keep the community informed on events, and updates throughout the County. The posting of weekly mugshots and arrests made in serious crimes, or crimes that have a strong community interest are among the information shared. These postings are meant to inform the community and provide insight into the day-to-day operations of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
The posting of mugshots, on Mondays has brought awareness to the effectiveness of an aggressive crime prevention mindset that the Sherriff’s Office has adopted, and has helped identify perpetrators of crimes committed in Lyon County. However, the mugshot postings have moved past their original intent, and have become more about insults, and crude comments than information sharing.
In order to get back to our original intent of posting mugshots, and significant arrests, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will be “turning off” comments on any post that contains a mugshot. The posts are shareable, and social media users are free to share posts containing mugshots and make comments on their own social media pages.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will not “turn off” comments on other posts, such as this one. This will allow those who have grievances with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office to air them in a public forum, as to not limit anyone’s free speech when speaking out against a government agency (namely the Sheriff’s Office).
Two major goals of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office are:
Aggressively target those that choose a life of crime over our quality of life, and create a true partnership with our community.
I believe this is a step in the right direction.
