Yerington, Nevada – According to the California Nevada River Forecast Center, the Walker River in Yerington and Mason Valley will reach near moderate flood stage on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Lyon County is working closely with the Walker River Irrigation District and collaborating agencies to monitor and mitigate potential flooding.
On Saturday, May 20, 2023, the Board of County Commissioners conducted an emergency meeting to direct the County Manager to take emergency measures to reinforce the banks of the Walker River in low lying areas to protect the health and safety of Lyon County residents and critical infrastructure. A recording of the meeting is available on the Lyon County YouTube Channel.
Lyon County is grateful for the support from local Peri and Sons Farms for providing material and heavy equipment to maintain stability of existing levees and dikes with the ultimate goal of protecting the City of Yerington and Mason Valley from potential flooding. “Had we not worked together to build up low lying areas over the weekend, we would have started to see significant flooding impacts in Yerington as early as Monday morning,” reports County Manager Andrew Haskin.
Lyon County applauds residents and the community for taking proactive measures to prepare for potential flooding, including gathering necessary supplies and sandbagging personal property. Citizens are advised to stay prepared and vigilant for increasing flows upwards of 4,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Snyder Lane near Mason gauge through the end of June-early July. Additional community preparedness information is available on the 2023 Flood Information page of the Lyon County website.
