Participate in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan

The Nevada Division of Forestry, in cooperation with the four County Fire Protection Districts, is working to develop a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for Lyon County, Nevada. The plan update involves coordination with stakeholders including; interested residents and local organizations, communities and municipalities, state and federal resource management agencies like the BLM and U.S. Forest Service, local Conservation Districts, and others. The County Fire Protection Districts involved in the update are North Lyon, Central Lyon, Mason Valley, and Smith Valley.

A CWPP is a community-based plan focused on identifying wildfire hazards and priority mitigation actions to reduce risks. Recommended actions may include hazardous fuel reduction, public education and outreach programs, and fire protection measures. The plan will benefit local communities by increasing the eligibility of Firewise® communities, fire protection districts, and local governments to receive state and federal grants to implement priority projects or programs that reduce wildfire threats.

The public is invited to attend local workshops or visit the project website to participate in the plan development. The public workshops will be hosted at the county fire district offices. A project team involving a consultant and fire officials will present the Draft CWPP and solicit public feedback on wildfire prevention priorities and needs in each fire district.

The two-hour public workshops are scheduled to occur at the following locations and times.

Smith Valley Fire Protection District. From 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 10 located at 1 Hardie Lane, Smith, NV.

Mason Valley Fire Protection District. From 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 11 located at 118 South Main Street, Yerington, NV.

The Draft CWPP and project updates will be available at www.rci-nv.com/lyonCWPP.

The deadline to submit comments on the Draft CWPP is November 16, 2023. The CWPP will be completed by the end of 2023.
