Irene Burd 1928~2022 “The spunky little lady whose most treasured moment was to make people smile”

Irene Burd

September 19, 1928 – May 19, 2022

Irene Burd a long-time resident of Yerington passed away on May 19, 2022 at the age of 93. She was born to Wilmont and Selena “Queenie” Bradley on September 19, 1928 in Winnipeg Canada.

Irene spent her childhood in Canada, moving to Hawaii in her late twenties where she met and married her husband, Lindus Burd. They lived in Hawaii for several years, moving to Yerington when Lindus retired. She told many stories of their camping, hiking, and fishing trips.

Irene’s employment varied from selling magazines as a child, telegrapher for the Canadian railroad, private detective, apartment manager, bookkeeper for construction and Lyon Health Center. She fulfilled her dream job when she opened her store “The Burd’s Nest”, being accomplished at petit point and beading she taught young and old alike her skills of needle crafting and beading. She taught many 4-H Classes, claiming that everyone of her students who entered their work in the county fair won a ribbon.

Irene was awarded the prestigious Jefferson Award for Volunteer of the Year. She gave her time selflessly to many senior citizens, some of whom were younger than she, volunteering to help them any way she could, driving them to appointments, shopping, cleaning, paying their bills, etc. She was an animal advocate volunteering her time at the animal shelter

Irene loved Jesus and her family, she was so excited when she received letters and texts from her family and friends. She was proud to show off the signed letter from the President when she received her US Citizenship. She was unselfish, giving, never jealous, or prideful, although she would tell you her opinion, whether you wanted it or not. Irene was a social butterfly, always had a corny joke, loved to read, watch football, and play Bingo.

Even though Irene was plagued with crippling arthritis, she made beautiful ornaments, giving them away professing her love for Jesus, hoping to receive a smile in return. She loved to see them displayed in stores, at doctor’s offices, on people’s visors, and in their front windows. When you see one displayed, smile, and think of the spunky little lady whose most treasured moment was to make people smile.

Irene is preceded in death by her Husband Lindus Burd, parents, Wilmont and Selena Bradley, sister Violet, and brother Stanley. She is survived by her Brother Kenneth Bradley, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In honor of Irene’s wishes there will be no services held.  Family and friends are invited to sign her online guest book at www.FRFH.net
