Yerington NV – February 6, 2026
Happy Friday evening everyone!
As I wrap up in the office this evening, I’d like to start by sharing a few community events that I’m aware of. And by the way, for a full list of community events, be sure to check out the Yerington Chamber of Commerce and their Community Calendar.

Western Nevada CattleWomen group is hosting their annual dinner at the Smith Valley Hall on February 14. Doors open at 5 p.m. Look them up for tickets.
Rotary Club of Yerington, Nevada is hosting their annual Boots Buckles & Bling event March 14, and I’m told tickets are selling fast. Again, look them up if you’d like to go to these wonderful events.

Happening as I write this, are basketball games at Yerington High School. As soon as I’m done in the office I’ll see you there! I’m told it’s Senior Night, which is always special.
As far as city business, work started this week to repair the alley behind Yerington High School and the Lyon County School District building. The repairs may take another week or so, as we are not just improving the surface, but also installing drainage improvements to try and correct the water that collects on the north end by the stop sign. Please avoid this area for another week or so while we finish this project.

The Yerington NV Animal Shelter is presenting an annual report at the regularly scheduled City Council meeting on Monday (February 9) at 10:00 a.m. Along with the 2025 report, you will hear insight to projects ahead for the shelter which include social media improvements, kennel improvements and long term plans for facility upgrades. Keep in mind, the long term plans do not have funding yet and cannot start until funding is secured, but staff is actively working on identifying the funding needs, so that we know how or where to find the opportunities to push it forward.
Also being discussed at Monday’s meeting are the OHV/ATV (Off Highway Vehicles/ All Terrain Vehicles) ordinances that we began discussing last fall. This is potentially the last public meeting before they are potentially adopted as official ordinance. The City of Yerington has been actively engaged in discussion to increase tourism, and ATV/OHV use is an area identified for significant opportunity for tourism.

The City has taken steps recently to support the Sage Crest Drive In Theater and the development of Farmy’s Off Road Park on “Y-Hill.” These are just two examples, in addition to regular VORRA (Valley Off Road Racing Association) events that show our potential to become an attraction. However, before we turn on a welcome sign, we need to implement safety measures to ensure public safety needs are met. At the bottom of this message I’ll post a link for the full agenda on our website, as well as the supporting documents in case you wish to review the proposed ordinances in full.
Also in regards to Public Safety – Yerington NV Police Department and several other local groups are starting to discuss some summer campaigns, this includes a “Bike Rodeo” which is an opportunity to teach our youth all about bicycle safety on public roads and adds a lot of fun elements. I may be a little bias here (by a little I mean a lot) but our YPD team does an incredible job of supporting the youth in our community, ongoing programs like this are just a small example.
Public Work staff has been working diligently to improve facilities at Mountain View Park. Ongoing repairs and improvements include several lights, improving the conditions of the pond and replacing the slide that was recently damaged. Upon completion of the slide, Councilman Nick Beaton and I were sure to conduct some very serious quality control measures. Sure enough, the slide (and gravity) are both still working.

Public Works staff is also working on some improvements to our wastewater ponds. This seems to be a common theme, but I hope our community is pleased to know that controlling odor, conditions of the wastewater and constant repairs and improvements are top of mind for our staff.
Discussions are also happening about improving our educational opportunities with colleges and trades. The goal here is to develop programs in our area that residents can benefit from while staying here in Yerington. Too often, working age residents leave our valley to pursue educational opportunities and many never return. This creates a gap in the family ages in our valley, which then leads to declines in schools, and so on and so forth. Once that decline starts, it tends to impact many elements in a negative fashion. Our goal is to retain these family age workers by offering college or trade education that allow them to stay here in our valley. These discussions will be ongoing for the next 6 or so weeks, so look for an update afterwards.
If you own commercial property along Main Street, Goldfield, Bridge, or the surrounding area, please be on the lookout next week for notifications of a stakeholder meeting. This is a public get together to help the City identify ways that mixed use of commercial property may lend to revitalization of particular buildings and/or properties. Say you own a commercial building with two or three floors. If you’d like to operate a business on the first floor, and operate apartments on the second or third floor, there may be ways to do this. However, before we (the City) start to put some of this to paper, we want to hear from YOU on what would be beneficial or detrimental to your operations. In Government, I recognize that we will never make everybody happy, but by allowing opportunities to speak up and address wants or concerns, we hope to do the best we can.
Here is our agenda for Monday:
With that, I have a basketball game to get to! I hope to see you there.
As always feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions or concerns.
