On Sunday November 2nd at 11:00 am, the people of The Community United Methodist Church invite the valley to celebrate 150 years of ministry and community service—a milestone that reaches back to the days when this town was still called Pizen Switch.
From its first gatherings in homes in 1866 to the building of a sanctuary in 1875, a sanctuary that stands at the heart of Yerington at 221 North Main Street, the church has carried one purpose through every generation: to promote the well-being of Mason Valley’s people in the name of Christ.
When Miss Mattie Wiley opened Mason Valley’s first school in the home of Alec McLeod, she was teaching more than letters and numbers—she was teaching hope. That same Mattie Wiley married Edwin R. Willis on September 27, 1876, in the first marriage blessed in this church.
By 1881 there were twenty-five members of the Methodist Church in Pizen Switch.
As Pizen Switch became Yerington, the Methodist Church remained steady through changing times – through World War One and Two, the Korean and Vietnam wars, through the mining booms and busts —offering food in lean years, songs in glad ones, counsel to the discouraged, and open doors to anyone seeking grace. The faces have changed, but the mission has not: to love God and neighbor with steadfast heart.
At 11:00 am on Sunday, November 2, we gather to give thanks for a century and a half of worship, service, and community care. Join us for music, fellowship, stories, and prayer as we honor those who came before us and renew the promise to keep Yerington’s well-being growing in faith, hope, and love for the next 150 years. We will also be dedicating two new memorial stained-glass windows.
