Happy Friday evening!
Wow! What an incredible weekend we have lined up here in Yerington. Tomorrow morning is our Air Fair (a.k.a. Fly In) at the Yerington Municipal Airport. Come on out to see some planes, drones, watch a K-9 demonstration from YPD and enjoy a pancake breakfast served by Rotary Club of Yerington. I’m told Rotary has a discounted breakfast rate for youth soccer players. The first $1,500 of their proceeds will benefit Sunshine Club who helps with school supplies.

We also have the Josh Farler Helping Hands Wine & Whiskey Walk happening tomorrow afternoon. This is another great charitable cause that is a lot of fun to participate in. Surf’s Up is the theme!

If a 5k/Town Walk is more your speed, that is happening tomorrow as well! 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., the YHS National Honor Society is hosting a town walk to raise funds for breast cancer research. While the streets will remain open during this walk, we will have caution signs and a police presence to ensure pedestrian safety while still allowing access in and out of the neighborhood along California Street (between Pearl and Bridge).
As if that wasn’t enough action, there’s also a Main Street Clean Up day scheduled for Sunday morning at the intersection of Goldfield and Main Street. Meet at City Hall, and be ready to clean, rake, shovel or paint as our Yerington Main Street Committee keeps busy with more improvement projects. All are welcome to join.

Speaking of the Yerington Main Street Committee (YMSC), you may notice that the old yellow 1952 Chevy pickup parked outside of City Hall has a festive look about it. This was courtesy of the YMSC and Scott Draper. I’d like to say thank you to Scott and YMSC for these continued efforts. What a great thing to see at this busy intersection.

Now for some community updates:
You may have noticed two street sweepers going through town this past Thursday. This is part of our continued effort to improve the condition of our roads and gutter systems (where gutter systems exist). You’ll be seeing one or more street sweepers on the road again in about five weeks.
Installation continues on the new California Well. It is not online just yet, but progress is made each day. We are almost there.
If you haven’t yet, please help us welcome new Chief of Police Shawn Clanton to the City of Yerington team. Chief Clanton was appointed by Yerington City Council on September 22 and has wasted no time jumping in with our wonderful officers and staff at the Yerington Police Department.
There has been increased discussion lately regarding OHV/Off road vehicles. The City of Yerington is no different. We continue to work on outdoor tourism campaigns and some of these concepts directly involve coordination for OHV/Off Road events. With that said, before entering into agreements, we need to have common sense regulations and ordinances that reflect the standards of our community and enforce safety. Be on the lookout for future meetings if you wish to be heard on these topics.
The Planning Commission for the City of Yerington recently approved a draft of an updated Master Plan and this draft will now be before the City Council on October 13 for final approval. I mention this because this document helps shape the future of our community through planning, zoning and more. These materials will be made available as part of the “Council Packet” prior to the October 13 meeting on our website if you wish to review them, or can be found in the packet for the previous Planning Commission meeting.
The City is currently hiring for a full time position at City Hall. This is a Court Clerk and Deputy Clerk position, with equal time dedicated to each role. If you are interested in applying, be sure to turn in your application and resume by Thursday, October 8.
As we start to head into cooler temperatures, you’ll see Public Works still busy trying to accomplish as much as they can outdoors before the weather prevents some projects from continuing. If you observe an area in need, please don’t hesitate to reach out to either Public Works Director Paul Shapiro or myself.
Paul can be reached at (775) 364-8895 and my line is (775) 344-0343.
Hopefully I run in to you at one of our upcoming events. Be sure to say hello.
