Director of Mackay School, Annie Huhta nominated Natalie Rubio for the Spirit of Mackay Award and wrote:
“Natalie embodies the very essence of this recognition demonstrating unwavering commitment, visionary leadership, and selfless dedication both to her peers and the greater Mackay community.

“In her previous roles as an officer of 3 clubs the John Mackay Club, Mackay Muckers and Women in Mining, Natalie has consistently set a high bar for student leadership. This year she has stepped into the role of mentor, guiding and supporting current club officers with remarkable generosity and wisdom. Her ability to lead with empathy, to collaborate effectively, and to elevate those around her has left a lasting legacy within these organizations.
“In her role as a student worker…Natalie has gone far beyond expectations. She has been visionary in re-imagining the services the center offers, taking the initiative to forge meaningful partnerships with industry leaders, creating opportunities that directly benefit Mackay students. Her outreach efforts have not only strengthened the bridge between students and industry but have also enriched the Mackay School’s reputation as a center of excellence.”

“Natalie’s impact extends beyond campus. Within the mining industry and our broader community, she is widely recognized as a dependable, passionate individual who is always the first to step up and help with outreach and engagement activities. She has earned multiple internships and her supervisors consistently commend her for being diligent, responsible and mature beyond her years.
“Natalie is truly someone who makes everything and everyone around her better just by existing. Her presence has elevated the Mackay School and she will be deeply missed as she prepares to graduate in just a few short weeks and the beginning of her next exciting chapter with Nevada Gold Mines working time at their Goldstrike Underground operations…
“Natalie, thank you for your leadership, your energy and your commitment to making a difference. The Mackay School offers its heartfelt congratulations and wishes you the very best in all your future endeavors. The mining industry and the world beyond are fortunate!”
Natalie was also awarded 2025 Outstanding Graduate Student recognition in the UNR Mackay School Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering.

Natalie grew up in Mason Valley, Nevada, graduating from Yerington High School before attending the University of Nevada, Reno.
