Yerington, Nevada ~ On Thursday afternoon, February 8, 2023, 12 finalists from Yerington High School gathered at the Jeanne Dini Center in the Yerington Theatre for the Arts to compete in the county level competition for Poetry Out Loud.
Poetry Out Loud, sponsored by Nevada Arts Council throughout Nevada, is a national arts education program that helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
Led by YHS Educator Amanda Aldridge, the 12 finalists were (in the order of their recitations) Natalie Thomas, Erin Spurgeon, (Ruby Rodriguez was unable to attend), Mia Reviglio, Farrah Bader, Ameila Hernandez, Ella Kilgore, Tyler Love, Gracie Jeka, Yesenia Zarazua, Chelsea Stubbs, Eliza Dervo, and Caitlynn Cummings.
Mrs. Mueller performed prompter duties and took photographs for the Malachite Yearbook. Mr. Wake tabulated the score sheets. And the 4 community judges were Margaret Heim, Jim Gianotti, Jennifer Smith, and Leah Wilkinson.
The theatre was filled with the competitors’ family and friends, as well as Yerington High School Staff and Students who helped coordinate this event.
After 2 rounds of entertaining, sometimes poignant recitations by these outstanding finalists, from a selection of more than 1200 classic and contemporary poems, Miss Farrah Bader was selected to advance to the Nevada State Competition of Poetry Out Loud.
