Sheriff Pope presents Deputy Wheeler with Life Saving Award

Yerington NV – October 12, 2026

On October 1, 2026 during the Lyon County Board of County Commissioners meeting, Sheriff Pope had the honor of presenting Deputy Wheeler with a Life Saving Award in recognition of his heroic actions.

On September 3, 2026, at approximately 1109 hours, Deputy Wheeler entered E-pod and observed an inmate attempting suicide by strangulation. The inmate had tied a bed-sheet around the metal bunk and tightly around his neck. Deputy Wheeler quickly entered the cell and immediately cut the sheet from the inmate’s neck, stopping the attempt and saving his life.

During a subsequent interview, the inmate stated that he had waited for deputies to leave the pod after serving lunch before carrying out his suicide attempt. A suicide note was also found in the cell, expressing his desire to die and apologizing for the pain he had caused his parents and girlfriend.

Nursing staff subsequently assessed the inmate and documented his injuries.

Deputy Wheeler’s vigilance and immediate response saved the inmate’s life and allowed him to receive psychiatric care. His decisive actions reflect the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to protecting and preserving life and exemplify the dedication deserving of the Life Saving Medal.
