YERINGTON, NV. — Members of the Rotary Club of Yerington traded their traditional pins and dinner for boots and dust on Tuesday, Sept. 1, taking an educational field trip to an active onion field in Northern Mason Valley.

Roughly 30 club members gathered on-site to observe the intricate mechanics of the local onion harvest firsthand. Field crews walked the group through the harvesting process, demonstrating the intensive labor, specialized machinery, and skilled techniques required to efficiently clear the fields while maximizing crop yields.

Mason Valley’s agricultural footprint relies heavily on its robust vegetable production, and the outing offered community leaders a transparent look into the dedication driving one of the region’s key economic engines. Rotary members saw each stage of the operation, from the initial lifting of the bulbs to the final sorting procedures that prepare the produce for distribution.

The hands-on demonstration underscored both the physical demands of agricultural work and the precise management needed to sustain top-tier field production in Northern Nevada. Rotary members expressed gratitude to the host farm and field management for opening their operations to the group, calling the experience a vital reminder of the hard work powering the local community.
