Lyon County NV – May 1, 2026
Message of the Week 05/01/2026

This is a somber week for all law enforcement officers in the State of Nevada. This week is dedicated to memorial services that honor law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice and died in the line of duty. For us who still attend or have attended the memorial services in the past, it is a reminder that every shift worked may be our last. Our chosen profession is dangerous, and every day law enforcement officers across the Country put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities.

The memorials begin with the Nevada Peace Officers Memorial service in Carson City. The names of law enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty are permanently engraved into the Peace Officer Memorial. This year, one name was added to the wall: North Las Vegas Officer Jason Roscow. Jason Roscow died in February of last year after a shootout with a suspect in North Las Vegas.

There are currently 158 names on the state law enforcement memorial, and it is now full. The Nevada Police Foundation is currently seeking donations to both expand and maintain the memorial. It receives no state funding. https://nevadapolicefoundation.org/donate/

The second memorial service takes place at 10:00 am today. The James D. Hoff Peace Officer Memorial is a memorial service for law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The memorial highlights those law enforcement officers, as well as honors law enforcement officers who, during the prior year, were placed in harm’s way and survived.

On Saturday, Sheriff Richard Hickox Jr. will be laid to rest in Fallon. Sheriff Hickox passed away from complications from cancer on Sunday, April 12th. Sheriff Hickox was a model Sheriff and will be missed not only by the men and women he led, but by all law enforcement in the State.

The Honor Guard of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office participates in this event every year. The men and women dedicated to displaying our agency colors and honoring our state and country’s flag are incredibly skilled. Thank you to those members who train and take the time to hone their skills for these events. For the first time in over fifteen years, a Lyon County Deputy was a member of the color guard team that presented the colors for the memorials. This was awesome to see, great job Deputy Patchen!
Respectfully,
Sheriff Brad Pope
