Lyon County NV – March 27, 2026
Lyon County School District is proud to recognize two outstanding educators who were recently honored with the LCSD Recognition Coin at the Board Meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
Principal Duane Mattice was recognized by Board of Trustee Member Elmer Bull for his remarkable 30-year career with Lyon County School District. Mr. Mattice began his journey as a teacher in Silver Springs before continuing his teaching career in Yerington. He later served as Principal of Yerington High School and, for the past seven years, has led Smith Valley Schools. As the principal of a K-12 school, Mr. Mattice has skillfully navigated the unique challenges of both primary and secondary education, all while fostering a strong sense of community and building lasting relationships. Known for putting students and staff first, he has been a respected leader and mentor to many aspiring administrators. Mr. Mattice plans to retire at the end of this school year, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and commitment.

Also recognized was Smith Valley Schools Counselor Eric Ozolins, who has made a profound impact on students throughout his career. He was recognized by Board of Trustee Member Dawn Carson. Mr. Ozolins is known for ensuring that every student feels seen, heard, and supported. He works closely with staff to guide course scheduling and connect students with valuable resources that support both their academic and personal success. Beginning his career in the Fernley area, Mr. Ozolins has built meaningful relationships with countless students and families. Like Mr. Mattice, he will be retiring at the end of this school year and will be greatly missed by the LCSD community.

Thank you, Mr. Mattice and Mr. Ozolins, for your years of service, leadership, and commitment to LCSD students and families.
