Pizen Switch Times

established 2021

Good afternoon Yerington community,

I’d like to start by saying how thankful I am for our community. Forgive me if I blur the line between city employee and husband/father/neighbor for just a moment, but the outpouring of love and support shown by this community over the last several weeks has been incredible.

The thoughts and prayers shared by each of you served as a foundation of strength in a time of need for so many, my family included. I’d like to ask that you continue to show this strength and support for those impacted by recent events. Please remember to also show appreciation for the first responders who sacrifice time with their own loved ones to try and protect yours.

Yerington/Mason Valley Fire Protection District, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office – Nevada, Yerington NV Police Department, Battle Born Medevac, South Lyon Medical Center.

I thank you all.

—————————————————————–

I’d like to thank Rotary Club of Yerington, Nevada for their recent assistance in helping the City acquire parts for the Rotary Clock on Main Street. Many of you may recall that the dedication of this clock years ago was part of a ceremony to recognize Rotary and their commitment to Yerington and all of Mason Valley. Rotary again stepped up to help the City acquire the parts needed for repair of the clock. I’m happy to report that those long awaited parts arrived in town yesterday and are scheduled for installation this next week. If the parts did not arrive, I was worried that this may cause us to be referred to as a land where time stands still…

You may have noticed that the flashing crosswalk signs outside of the Boys & Girls Club Teen Center and Financial Horizons Credit Union are installed and operational. This was part of an initiative from your City to increase pedestrian safety on Main Street, especially at a location of high foot traffic. The Yerington NV Main Street Committee and your City staff worked together to help push this project along. Thank you to all involved.

Speaking of safety, this is a great time to remind you of the Speed Awareness Campaign that is ongoing with Yerington Police Department and several other agencies. Speeding is one of the biggest contributors of to fatalities on Nevada roadways. While this campaign officially has an end date of January 31, 2026, please know that speeding is not any safer on February 1, 2026 and will be enforced the same.

Our next Yerington City Council meeting is this next Monday, January 26, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Meeting agendas can always be found on our website www.yerington.net .

Of note on this agenda are recognition of Judge Lori Matheus for her, and her staff, assisting with Yerington Municipal Courts, a presentation by BLM regarding activity happening around our city, the presentation of an Emergency Response Plan by Public City of Yerington Public Works Director Paul Shapiro, an annual report of the Yerington Planning Commission activities for 2025 and a review of information from the City’s recently adopted 20 year Master Plan. By reviewing one chapter a month every month with our Council, we are working to keep our Master Plan a living and breathing document, rather than an expensive book that sits on a shelf.

Again, I will not go into detail on the matters above until the meeting (which can also be participated in via zoom) but I encourage you to come down and participate if at all possible. If you’re unable to participate in person or via zoom, you are also welcome to submit comments ahead of time to have your voice/concern heard during the meeting.

Public Comment can be sent to stacys@yerington.net. Remember to put PUBLIC COMMENT in the subject line and get comments submitted before 4 p.m. the business day prior to the meeting.

I mentioned above that the Yerington Planning Commission will present the 2025 annual report Monday. On that note, I’d also like to congratulate two new members on their appointment to this Commission. Keith Trout and Micah Triplett. Both are long time Yerington residents and I am confident they will serve their community well in their new roles. The Yerington Planning Commission is a board of 7 members who review zoning, planning and development projects within city limits and make recommendations to your elected official (City Council) for consideration.

Over the next few weeks, your city staff is working on plans for improvements to the Yerington NV Animal Shelter, Ordinances regarding junk/unregistered vehicles and budget items for 2026/2027 fiscal year.

Much of this work starts now, then works it’s way through committees and eventually(possibly) to your City Council.

Another item of note is that 2026 represents the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As a city, I’m interested to hear thoughts and ideas on how we can best honor this great achievement.

One thought – and it’s only a thought – is to see if we, as a city, can publish 250 individual stories from our residents as a 250th anniversary book from Yerington. Not all of my thoughts are winners, so don’t be afraid to remind me. However, if you’re interested in helping with a project like this, and possibly having some of the stories read to the public before the fireworks the night of July 4th, 2026 please let me know. I’m not sure if we can pull this off without significant volunteer contributions, but if any of you are interested, I welcome your help.

With that, I’ll leave you to your Saturday and wish you all a great weekend. If you have any questions or comments feel free to reach out.

Respectfully,

Jerry Bryant

Interim City Manager
