Every once in a while, I receive a phone call from a concerned citizen wanting to complain about an interaction with one of our Deputies. After hearing a deputy’s name I had never heard, I ask the callers where they are calling from, and I have to refer them to the right Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests are routinely sent to our Records Division, related to other Lyon County Sheriff’s Offices. Or an upset person on social media claims the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has multiple lawsuits pending, “just Google it”, I have to remind concerned citizens that there are several “Lyon County Sheriff’s Offices ” in the United States. Five to be exact:

There are five distinct Lyon County Sheriff’s Offices in the United States — one for each county named Lyon County. In the U.S., most counties have an elected sheriff and a sheriff’s office responsible for law enforcement and county policing functions (patrol, courts/jail, civil processes). The five Lyon Counties and their sheriff’s offices are:

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office — Nevada

Serves Lyon County, Nevada (western Nevada).

Main office: Yerington, Nevada.

Additional substations in Fernley, Dayton, and Silver Springs, NV.

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office — Iowa

Serves Lyon County, Iowa (northwestern Iowa).

Headquarters: Rock Rapids, Iowa (Lyon County Law Enforcement Center).

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office — Kansas

Serves Lyon County, Kansas (east-central Kansas).

Headquarters: Emporia, Kansas.

Typical duties: law enforcement, jail/court services, civil process.

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office — Kentucky

Serves Lyon County, Kentucky (western Kentucky).

Headquarters: Benton, Kentucky (county seat).

(There’s no major website in the search, but the sheriff’s office exists as the local county law enforcement agency.)

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office — Minnesota

Serves Lyon County, Minnesota (southwestern Minnesota).

Headquarters: Marshall, Minnesota.

Responsible for patrol, civil process, jail/courts, and county-wide law enforcement.

Our social media, community, and media presence have grown substantially over the past three years. This ensures that any internet search for “Lyon County Sheriff’s Office” returns results and contact information for our office. It can be a hassle at times, but overall, the callers seem apologetic and happy that they are given the right contact information to their local Sheriff’s Office.
