Sierra Sage Students Get Creative for the County Fair

Mason Valley, Nevada – August 28, 2025

For three weeks this summer the students at Sierra Sage Treatment Center put their books and computers away for one class period a day and got creative. Mrs. Beaton’s classroom was bursting with color and imagination as students learned about color theory, textures, and painting techniques.

Whimsical paintings on canvas came to life and sunflowers were a favorite to create. For those who didn’t consider themselves “artsy” there were plenty of crafty alternatives. Some constructed large flowers wreaths made with recycled book pages while others used old sheet music and napkins to make decoupage pictures and vases. Then students took riches from the garden they planted back in May and been caring for all summer. They arranged beautiful floral bouquets from zinnias, sunflowers, snapdragons, cosmos and some more unique plants as oregano and dried grasses.

Not only did our students work on projects to enter into the fair, but for 5 days our students worked at the Lyon County Fairgrounds doing community service in preparation for the fair. They worked with the organizers to decorate entry displays and vendors in setting up their wares. The final adventure was entering their work into the county fair. 24 students entered 57 pieces– and their hard work paid off. Sierra Sage Academy brought home an impressive collection of awards. 4 best of class rosettes, one 2nd in class rosette, 31 blue ribbons and 24 red ribbons.

Congratulations to our students on all their creative hard work!
