Lyon County Board of County Commissioners Meeting Summary ― August 21, 2025
Yerington, Nevada – The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Thursday, August 21, 2025 to hear presentations and take action on several significant agenda items. Highlights from the meeting include:
Historic Dayton Depot Restoration Project
The Board heard a presentation from the Dayton Historic Society regarding the reconstruction of the historic Dayton Depot building, which was destroyed from a fire that was set in June 2020. The Society outlined plans to return the structure to its historic characteristics and highlighted the importance of getting the rail depot back on the register of historic buildings. Following the presentation, the Board discussed adding future improvements to the site such as onsite restrooms and fire sprinklers as funding opportunities are available in the future. The Board voted to direct County staff to move forward with construction on the project.
Lyon County Housing Assessment & Affordability Analysis
The Board of County Commissioners heard a presentation from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Nevada Economic Assessment Project’s (NEAP) Housing Assessment and Affordability Analysis for Lyon County. This report will inform policy, grant applications, strategic plans, and programmatic solutions as appropriate to address the attainable housing gaps and needs for our residents. Awards & Recognitions
· Commissioners recognized the retirement of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Borys for 8 years of service with his dedicated handler Sergeant Wayne Hawley.
· Commissioners presented the volunteer group, Desert Pigs, with the Good Samaritan Award.
Other Board Actions:
· Park Construction Tax – Approved a request from the City of Yerington to use park construction tax in the amount of $33,973.01 for improvements for tennis and pickle ball courts on East Goldfield Avenue.
· Tradition Village 2 Subdivision Map – Approved the request submitted by Lucas Homes and Development LLC to amend Condition 20.g of the Tentative Subdivision Map originally approved on May 2, 2019 (PLZ2025-055) to allow infrastructure and housing to begin without delay for Traditions Village 2 Phase 1. Drainage improvements remain required and enforceable prior to the broader build out of the project.
· Pretrial Services Department – Approved reorganizing and renaming the Court Services Department to report to the County Manager or his designee instead of to the Justice Courts and to rename the department Pretrial Services Department.
· Planning Commission – The Board acknowledged the resignation of Ralph N. Ewing from the Planning Commission.
