Lyon Sheriff Pope’s Message of the Week on July 18, 2025

In January of 2023, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office had over 20 vacant sworn positions. The majority of those positions were patrol Deputies. As of right now, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is fully staffed and has zero vacant positions. In fact, we are operating from a hiring list.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will continue to aggressively recruit throughout the region to maintain the hiring list and limit the downtime it takes to fill a position when a Deputy retires, resigns, or moves to another law enforcement agency. Community members with Category 1 certifications, Category 3 certifications, and veterans will be moved up the list. We encourage anyone interested in a career in law enforcement to apply.

It has taken an extreme effort from the entire department to get to this position of being fully staffed. Our field training officers, dispatchers, and records personnel put a lot of effort into training one Deputy. When a person with zero law enforcement experience is hired, the process of fully training that person to be a patrol Deputy can take nearly a year. In the detention division, the training process can take over six months.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has sent as many Deputies as possible to each POST Category 1 academy over the past 2.5 years. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has graduated an average of 6 Deputies from each academy class. The most recent academy class started two days ago, where three Lyon County Deputies are currently receiving instruction and will obtain their category 1 certification. That number decreased to 3, simply because every other patrol Deputy has their category 1 certification.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has begun sending Detention Deputies to the category 1 academy, so they have their certification to work patrol, and are ready to start field training as soon as a vacancy presents itself. The recruitment, hiring, and training processes have been made more efficient, and this is assisting in reducing the amount of time a vacancy is open within the Sheriff’s Office.
