Yerington, NV – Walker Basin Conservancy, a non-profit group focused on the restoration and conservation of the Walker River Basin and Walker Lake, have been selected in a competitive process by Travel Nevada to pursue a tourism planning project. With support from the Yerington Main Street Committee, Walker River State Recreation Area, Boys & Girls Club of Mason Valley, and the Yerington Chamber of Commerce, this venture aspires to link the communities connected by the Walker River with a unified place-based tourism experience and marketing campaign while building the local tourism economy and supporting conservation, history and culture, and outdoor recreation.
On Wednesday, February 5 at 6 p.m., the first of two 90-minute Community Sessions will take place at the Yerington Theater for the Arts (120 N. California St., Yerington). Attendees will have the opportunity to have their voices heard, provide comments, and ask questions. Walker Basin Conservancy’s concept centers on driving more tourism, business, and recognition of the rich cultural and recreational resources within the Walker Basin and the communities along the Walker River in an effort to improve quality of life for area residents. The planning process will also look to highlight ways in which visitors can experience unexpected history, pioneer and native cultures, miles of open space, and unexpected richness and lushness along Nevada’s flowing oasis.
The community is invited to attend this session to take part in this important planning process. The project is being guided by a local steering committee including parks staff, tribal representatives, city/county/state officials, members of the business community, and tourism professionals. The project advances Travel Nevada’s focus on destination development to expand the state’s tourism infrastructure and build rural economies by attracting more traveler spending.
Travel Nevada’s innovative Destination Development Design (3D) Project, now in the third round, will provide four months of expert consulting and ultimately award a share in a $1 million grant program funded through Nevada’s lodging tax revenue. The project is providing Walker Basin Conservancy and the Walker River region with a customized planning process to create a 10-year Destination Plan for the area. Once the plan is complete, the Conservancy will have a chance to apply for a portion of the funding to bring the concept to life.
