Yerington, NV – The Walker Basin Conservancy, in partnership with the Yerington Main Street Committee, was selected by Travel Nevada for a Destination Development project to expand tourism offerings in rural Nevada communities. The project will develop a 10-year sustainability-focused destination plan to link the communities connected by the Walker River (Topaz, Smith, Yerington, Schurz, and Hawthorne) with a unified sense of place and an immersive, educational visitor experience.
“This is an outstanding opportunity for communities along the Walker River to highlight their existing outdoor recreation destinations, agricultural industries, cultural attractions, and community events to drive tourism dollars and investment here locally in the Walker Basin,” says Brice Boland, Community Engagement Manager with the Conservancy. “The Walker Basin features, for instance, outstanding fishing, OHV trails, and authentic Nevada communities that are an experience-focused draw for tourism, bringing in considerable dollars to the region.”
The Yerington Main Street Committee sees this project as an opportunity for more visitors to visit the community’s historic downtown.
“As we discuss the many different, amazing reasons people have to come visit Yerington and Mason Valley, our incredible outdoors rank at the top of the list,” said Nick Beaton, the Committee’s president. “This partnership is going to really enhance the outdoor recreation experience for our residents and visitors alike.”
The Yerington Main Street Committee was founded in early 2024 with the mission of revitalizing and beautifying Yerington’s Main Street corridor. Capital projects, cleanups, business revitalizations and visitor outreach are all focuses of the Committee and the Committee has already given the local community an overall facelift and economic bump.
Travel Nevada’s Destination Development Design (3D) Project is a long-range, tourism-based community planning program providing rural communities across Nevada the opportunity to expand their tourism economies. Selected destinations complete six months of consulting that will provide guidance and recommendations for growing tourism in a way that is authentic, sustainable, and supports the community’s culture, heritage, and character. For questions or inquiries about the destination plan, contact Brice Boland at brice.boland@walkerbasin.org.
