Message of the Week 11/8/2024
In the coming weeks, online shopping will become more frequent, creating opportunity for thieves and porch pirates to victimize the citizens of Lyon County. For the Message of the Week, I wanted to take some time to provide information regarding best practices for safe guarding packages this Holiday Season. The following tips will help reduce the opportunities for theft, as well as provide opportunities for responding officers to solve these cases if theft does occur.
Use package tracking to know when your package is coming and to plan to be home to retrieve it.
If you won’t be home, have your package delivered to a secure location like a workplace, friend’s house, or package locker.
Choose delivery options that require a signature upon delivery so the package isn’t left unattended.
A visible security camera or video doorbell can deter thieves and provide evidence for responding deputies. You can also set up alerts to receive notifications when a package is delivered.
Establish a system with neighbors to help each other keep an eye on packages.
If you do have a package that is missing or has been stolen, please contact law enforcement immediately to begin an investigation. I also suggest you contact the retailer and report the discrepancy. Many retailers work diligently to fulfill orders, even if they have been stolen.
The Sheriff’s Office patrol division and Volunteers in Policing conduct increased neighborhood patrols during these times and in particular if thieves have been identified in a particular area.
The Sheriff’s Office conducts house watches for citizens, who are out of town, during the holiday season. To request your residence be checked by deputies or volunteers, please stop by the local substation and complete a brief request with information regarding your residence or property, so we can get you on the list of residences to be checked.
