Lyon County Board of County Commissioners Meeting Summary for October 17, 2024

Yerington, Nevada – The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners convened on Thursday, October 17, 2024, to hear presentations and approve several significant agenda items.

Presentation on Lithium Battery Fire Preparedness
Smith Valley Fire Protection District Chief Matthew Nightingale and Captain Frank Hunewill led an overview presentation on lithium batteries, including fire response and environmental concerns. Central Lyon Fire Chief Rich Harvey, North Lyon Chief Brian Bunn, and Mason Valley Fire Chief Scott Draper were also present to answer questions related to fire suppression and building codes to reduce fire risk to Lyon County’s communities.

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is participating in the K9 unit challenge in Carson City on Saturday, October 19, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Fuji Park. The Sheriff’s Office will also be conducting a saturation patrol in the Mound House area on Nevada Day weekend.


Other Board Action Items
• Planning Items: Approved a request from Thomas Combs for the abandonment of a 60’ wide dedicated access easement as granted on Land Map 91338, located at 5740 and 5760 Iron Mountain Boulevard in Stagecoach. Lyon County is still accepting applications for the Planning Commission. Applications for Planning Commission must be submitted by Friday, October 18, by 5:00pm to be included in the Agenda packet for the November 7th BOCC meeting.
• Human Services Grants and Contracts: Approved a contract between Lyon County and Social Entrepreneurs, Inc. (SEI) in the amount of $55,447.50 to assist Lyon County Human Services in developing the next five year Strategic Plan. The Board also accepted a grant from the Nevada Aging and Disabilities Division in amount of $80,000, with a county match of $26,667, to provide Dementia Care Specialist services. Commissioners also accepted a grant award from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in the amount of $673,000 to provide mobile crisis services for youth in Lyon County, including adding a Behavioral Health Clinician position.
• Courts: Approved adding a new Senior District Court Clerk position at an estimated annual cost of $92,000 with prorated fiscal year funding of $69,000 to come from General Fund contingency. Awarded the Fernley Justice Court Expansion Project to the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, Reyman Brothers Construction, Inc. and approve the associated contract for $5,242,119. In addition, the Board approved an Interlocal Agreement with the City of Fernley for the Fernley Justice Court and District Court Fernley Juvenile Master Court to be held at the City Council Chambers during the justice complex remodel.
• Advisory Boards: The Board directed the County Manager’s Office to draft revisions to the Citizen Advisory Board Handbook and Bylaws to bring back as a future agenda item.
