Spotlight on business: Eagle Ship and Print

by Richard Massey

Some time ago I was delighted to learn that our little community has a business that offers big-city services with an amazing variety of quality products while maintaining true down-home family values.

As a writer and photographer, I am always in need of office supplies and professional photo printing. Up till recently I have had to go to Carson City or Reno to find what I needed. Little did I know that this seemingly small shop located at 512 W. Goldfield Ave., just west of the Maverik Gas Station, had everything I needed and at a comparable price to what I had been paying in the big city. I have always valued small-businesses that are run by the folks that own it. Eagle Ship and Print is a shining example of a true hands-on owner operation.

I’m ashamed to admit that I thought they only did shipping/mailing and document printing. I was blown away when I first dropped by. I wanted to see if they could pack and mail a large framed photograph for me. As I walked in the door I was surprised to see them pulling off a huge 4’ by 8’ colored banner from one of their many printers. I glanced around the shop, and was surprised to see such a well-stocked variety of office supplies, packing materials, printers, scanners, and mail boxes. At this point I said to myself, “I really need to get out more!”

As I waited briefly at the counter, a gentleman with a friendly smile approached and asked how he could help me. I was surprised to learn he was one of the owners, Justin Warner and that was his dad Cliff that was helping him manage the large banner. Right after I explained what I needed, he picked up my picture and immediately proceeded to find the appropriate box, fill it with packing material, seal it up and had it ready for shipping right as the label and my receipt were just coming off the register. Wow, what fast service!

As Justin and I were chatting about some of the services they offer, a lady came out from the back office and attended to another customer. He told me that she was his mother, Becky. I was impressed by how friendly and efficiently they all worked. Beyond just serving their customers, they take the time to visit and make you feel your business is genuinely appreciated. How refreshing!

I was aware they printed business fliers, brochures, posters, and business cards but what caught my attention was a display that stated they also did photo printing. As the pictures were the typical family and travel snapshots, I figured the service wouldn’t be of high quality and was directed solely to the amateur market. When I told Justin that I was a photojournalist and occasionally exhibited my work, he suggested that I have him do my prints. Since he didn’t have any sample prints to show me, I was less than impressed.

Again, feeling my images were a step above snapshots, I reluctantly returned the next morning and dropped off a thumb-drive with a couple images to be made into 11” x 14” prints. My expectations were pretty low but I wanted to see what he could do. To my surprise, the prints were excellent and were as good as the prints I would have received from any custom photo printing service.

Although I had requested prints with no border, he had made an additional sample print to show me how nice one of the prints could look by a process called layering. The image was excellent and highlighted the smaller image outlined with a narrow white band that gave the impression that the image was floating on a gray background…a very creative and thoughtful approach.

As a result of the quality work and fast service, I was able to accept an invitation to have a one-man exhibit at our Lyon County Fair. This feat of producing twenty 11” x 14” quality prints on such short notice would have been impossible had I relied on any out-of-town provider. If you are an artist, photographer, or crafts-person, do yourself a favor and stop by to see how they can meet your needs.
