Summer AmeriCorps Positions Open in Lyon County
Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) is recruiting for AmeriCorps members to serve part-time this summer. Members will teach financial literacy at Boys & Girls Clubs in Yerington, Silver Springs and Dayton, or at HCC food pantries in Dayton, Yerington or Silver Springs.
AmeriCorps is a national program that connects individuals and organizations to help communities tackle challenges. HCC will provide the training needed to learn about and then teach financial literacy skills. AmeriCorps members connect with an expanded professional and social network and gain valuable experiences that often lead to employment after their service ends.
HCC’s new AmeriCorps’ Literacy in Financial Thinking (LIFT) program places AmeriCorps members at host sites such as Boys & Girls Clubs and food pantries to perform educational service that strengthens community members’ financial literacy.
Members will spend about 6 hours per week in online training. This includes training on the 14 modules of Money Smart, HIPPA, FERPA, and 5 online courses about AmeriCorps service. Members will spend 6 to 10 hours per week preparing, promoting and teaching Money Smart courses. They’ll also spend approximately 12-16 hours per week serving at their host location, which involves helping at either Boys & Girls Club or HCC’s food pantries in Dayton, Silver Springs or Yerington.
Members will receive training related to their service activities as well as personal and professional development, a living allowance, and an education award for college or technical school or to pay off existing higher-education debts.
The open positions are for 30 hours a week for 10 weeks (June 10, 2024 to August 18, 2024). The living allowance for this period will be $3,667 and the education award will be $1,460.
Specific duties include:
• Completing training modules of the Money Smart curriculum.
• Creating a training schedule for financial literacy courses for a host site population and using pre and post surveys to measure results.
• Participating in 1-on-1 training with the HCC AmeriCorps Program Director.
• Participating in Teams meetings with the entire group of AmeriCorps LIFT members.
• Completing HIPPA, FERPA Civil rights and Non-Discrimination training.
Preferred skills include writing skills; the ability to work as part of a team and individually; and interest in financial literacy. A background or interest in teaching is a plus.
