Commissioners Hear Night in the Country Economic Impact Presentation and Take Other Action During March 21, 2024 Meeting

Yerington, Nevada – The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners heard a presentation from University of Nevada, Reno – University Center for Economic Development (UCED) on the economic impact of the 2023 Night in the Country music festival. In total, the overall economic impact of Night in the County 2023 on the community was reported to be $25,292,561.63 and created 234.06 jobs. Of the $6,213,973.02 total overall tax revenue generated impact, an estimated $451,728.70 directly impacted County tax revenue. The highest spending category for event attendees was event fees, followed by food and beverages purchased outside of the event, lodging, and fuel and transportation. Mound House Community Center

Lyon County Manager Andrew Haskin provided an update on the Mound House Community Center project and provided financing options, including applying for federal appropriations, establishing a general improvement district, and placing the project on the County’s Capital Improvement Projects list. Following discussion, Commissioner Henderson motioned to direct County staff to conduct research on additional financing options such as the costs for a $1 million bond, establishing a 501(c)3 nonprofit, leasing options, and allocating brothel tax. The motion failed 2 in support (Henderson and Hockaday) and three opposed (Hendrix, Keller, and Jacobson).

Other Board Action Items
  • Accepted a grant award in the amount of $88,442 from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services for FY2024 for the newly developed Lyon County Resilient Families (LCRF) Program and created a new Senior Case Management position.
  • Accepted a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster 4708 award from the Nevada Division of Emergency Management in the amount of $85,302.85, with a County match of $21,325.71 to reimburse the County for emergency protective measures taken during the atmospheric river flooding that occurred between March 8-19, 2023.
  • Authorized Commissioners Hockaday, Hendrix, and Keller as well as County Manager Haskin to attend the 2024 National Association of Counties Annual Conference and Exposition in Hillsborough County, Florida July 12-15, 2024.
  • Appointed Heidi Marty to the Mound House Advisory Board with a term expiring December 31, 2024 and Melissa Friend to the Silver City Advisory Board with a term expiring December 31, 2025.
