Arthur Edward Winward, Jr. ~ 1937 to November 20th, 2023 ~ “Beloved by family and all who knew him”

Arthur Edward Winward, Jr. passed peacefully after a short illness on Monday, November 20, 2023 and with his wife by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur Sr., and Edna; as well as his younger sister, Jeanette Ruedy. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carol, his son Robert (Julie) of Yerington; their daughter Megan (Leo, Jr) Solari and great grandchildren Adam, Leo III, and Vada Rose, all of Yerington; his daughter Kathleen (Levi) Cates, their daughter Keira (Justin) Buckbee and great grandchildren Emma and Russell, all of Nevada City, California. He is also survived by his younger brother, Walter (Sandi Jean) of Willits, California and numerous nieces and nephews.

Art was born in 1937 in Providence, R.I. His parents moved west in 1949. Art graduated from Sparks High School in 1955. He and Carol moved to Yerington in 1965 with Laurentide Finance Company. He was hired on at Anaconda Copper in 1967 where he worked his way up from day laborer to payroll accountant. He joined the local Eagles Aerie and became president in 1971. When the mine closed, he moved his family to the San Francisco Bay Area where he earned his AA degree in accounting. His various jobs took the family to Sacramento, Dallas TX, and back to Sacramento. Upon retiring he and Carol moved to Roseburg, OR where he reactivated his membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and serving the veterans in the Roseburg VA Hospital and became the Exalted Ruler of the Roseburg Chapter 326 in 2008.

Art and Carol returned to Yerington in 2012 to be with family. Even though he was retired, Art accepted a part-time position with the Maverik gas station as the outdoor grill master. He served up hamburgers, hot dogs, a huge smile to all who came by, and unlimited chats. When this position was eliminated, Art went on to volunteer his time at the local animal shelter. Still wanting to help others, Art volunteered as a driver for Helping Hands. He loved driving people to medical appointments in Reno and Carson City and renewed many old friendships. He lived for the next call-out to help anyone unable to drive out of town. He will be missed, not only by his family, but by the many people he helped.

Art Memorial service will be held 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 9, 2023 at the Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home Chapel, 25 Hwy 208 Yerington.  Family and friends are invited to sign his online guest book at www.FRFH.net
