Lyon County Sheriff Brad Pope’s Message of the Week: May 26,2023

From Sheriff Pope:   Memorial Day is Monday, May 29th. Please take a moment on Monday to honor and mourn the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Throughout our history, Men and Women have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the freedoms we enjoy every day. Myself and several members of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will be attending the memorial services at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

I will be presenting “How Teens Abuse Prescription Medicine” throughout Lyon County during the second week of June. Attached to this message are the fliers that give the location and time throughout Lyon County.

June 7th @ 6:00PM Yerington Boys and Girls Club Teen Center
June 8th @ 6:00PM Silver Springs High School
June 14th @ 6:00PM Dayton Community Center

June 15th @ 6:00PM Fernley Senior Center

I encourage every parent to attend one of the presentations. Prescription medication abuse leads to harder drug seeking behavior. With opioid abuse, and overdoses on the rise throughout the Country, learning how to identify and prevent the abuse of prescription drugs may save a life.

Common symptoms of prescription drug abuse include:
-Drug-seeking behaviors.
-Taking higher doses than prescribed.
-Hostility.
-Appearing to be intoxicated, overly energetic, or lethargic.
-Changes in sleeping and eating patterns.
-Increased usage of alcohol.

-Mood swings relating to availability of prescription medications.

Prescription opioid misuse includes taking someone else’s medicine, using medicine in a way other than prescribed, taking medicine to get high, or mixing medicine with alcohol or other substances. Oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine are some of the most commonly misused prescription pain medications.

Messages such as this will be shared several times throughout the year. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office believes community involvement and education can slow the rise of drug abuse in our communities, especially amongst our children.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message, have a safe Memorial Day weekend, and once again please take time to remember those that have given so much to this Country, and our freedom.

Respectfully,
Sheriff Brad Pope
