Yerington NV – May 1, 2026

Happy Friday!

First thing’s first, I’m going to need you to grab a pen and paper to write this down. We have a ton happening within our beautiful city!

Tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. is the Fishing Derby! Located at the Mason Valley Fish Hatchery, this is an incredible event put on by our local Lion’s Club and Department of Wildlife. Kids love this event!

Speaking of Lion’s Club – THANK YOU again for the wonderful flags down Main Street. This wonderful contribution highlights the Lions District 46 Convention that is happening NOW in Yerington. We appreciate that the Lions Club chose our site as the host for this years festivities.

On Monday, May 4th, the Yerington Chamber of Commerce and Yerington NV Main Street Committee unveil their 3D Mural located at the corner of Littel and Main Street. Unlike a regular mural, this mural has a 3D component (hence the name) that has live features in front of it that incorporate with the painting on the wall behind it. This was made possible through many volunteer efforts and grant funds secured in a partnership with Walker Basin Conservancy. Thank you to all involved who made this a reality. We hope to see you there Monday evening.

Regarding some City business:

Next week we have an Administrative Committee Meeting, Monday May 4th at 1:30 p.m. This is a second public meeting to discuss down town ordinances and the creation of a Main Street Overlay District(MSOD). The intention here is to create a vision of our downtown, a vision that we can be proud of and use to promote tourism and increase traffic.

During this meeting we will also hear for the first public discussion, the concept of transitioning our business license and liquor licenses from a quarterly renewal process to an annual renewal process. If you are a business owner, please make an effort to chime in with your thoughts on how this may impact your business. We value our business owners, as they lay the foundation of our economic structure. Before making these decisions, it’s imperative we hear from you.

At our last City Council meeting, one of the items discussed was Chapter 4 of our City Master Plan. This chapter discusses seismic activity, and coincidentally, this is good timing to review this. In a nutshell, we recognize that many of our older, historic structures are vulnerable if we have a large seismic event. As a City, our goal to correct this is to ensure that new development comply with safety standards and that any historic, or older structures get compliant when they make other significant updates to their structures. I’ll also attach a safety flyer with some basic safety tips. Considering our recent spike in seismic activity, it’s probably a good idea to know how to shut off your gas, water, or power should you need to in an emergency.

I was able to meet with an organization called Film Nevada earlier this week as well, along with members of our Chamber and Main Street organizations. Film Nevada is a division within the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED). The purpose of this meeting was to get Yerington added to the directory of filming locations that are available to film studios (for a fee). The proximity of our municipal controlled airport, abundant ranch locations, open desert landscape and various other items make us a prime location for particular styles of film. By adding us to this directory, we hope that phones may start ringing in the near future with studios wanting to utilize our elements. This is just one more way we are seeking to put Yerington on the map in a great way and bring positive revenue and activity to our valley. There may be opportunity for the private sector to also make their properties available for some projects as well, but of course, that will vary on a case by case basis.

As always, agendas and supporting documents can be found on our website at www.yerington.net, and if you have any questions or comments, you can always reach me directly at jerryb@yerington.net.

I need to wrap up a few things here at the office, then get some rest before a busy weekend!

Have a great weekend everybody.
