Good evening Yerington! I hope everybody is enjoying November and preparing for a Thanksgiving feast with loved ones.
While visiting our Yerington Police Department, our Chief of Police Shawn Clanton shared two scrapbooks with me that each contained years of photos and newspaper clippings of activity from our very own YPD. I wanted to share just one of the gems from these wonderful finds with the community.

As for activity within the City, we have been extremely busy lately, so I wanted to share at least a little snapshot into some of the activities.
I wanted to first address some safety concerns in regards to the intersection of Highway 339 and Goldfield Ave. We’ve seen a recent uptick in accidents in this area and I have been active in discussions with NDOT and I want to say that NDOT has been very willing to hear me out. We are scheduling a meeting in the near future to discuss further. I won’t make any premature comments about solutions, or other ways this may go, but please know that discussions are happening and I will update the public with any concrete steps that develop.

To be clear, this is a NDOT intersection and the role of the City in this discussion is to provide insight, raise concerns, and work towards agreeable solutions, to the extent possible.
I also wanted to share that our California Well will be up and online this Wednesday, November 18. This has been a very long process but I am very excited to get this critical component introduced to our water system. Once online, it will have to produce samples for testing for about two weeks before any water it produces can be made available for the public, but assuming everything goes well, the water from this new well should be introduced to our water system in early December.
The pickleball courts are up and I’ve seen several members of our community already putting them to use. The best part is, I’m being told that they play very well! With this project complete, we’re happily on to the next project, which is construction of a brick wall on the tennis court side to allow solo practice and play, as well as steps being taken to rehabilitate the surface of the remaining tennis court. Again, I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but please know we are actively working plans to improve this court next.
In case you missed it, we had a public meeting this last Wednesday night in which I shared a little information about some of our outdoor recreation tourism plans and how they tie in to the Farmy’s Offroad Park development at “Y” hill. As part of this, I also proposed some common sense regulations for the City to consider so that if tourism increases activity, our public safety regulations should preemptively mitigate most concerns.

I realize that we can never remove all concerns, but we will do our best to be proactive rather than reactive. The next steps in this process is to make the recommended updates that came from the meeting, review them with our legal team, then present them again at a City Council meeting for possible adoption. This City Council meeting will be a public meeting as well (likely December 8 or January 12) that anyone is welcome to attend and provide feedback on.
Our Public Works crew was busy today and yesterday cleaning storm drains. We are expecting some moisture to hit next week and we are working diligently to remove clutter and debris from storm drains to allow easy drainage where possible. I wish I could say that we would absolutely clear every one of them, but the reality is, there is probably too much build up to have it cleared completely that soon. While I’m a realist, please know that we are actively pushing to accomplish as much of this as possible before weather conditions remind us of what the weather is capable of.
We also have another round of street sweeping scheduled for next Friday, November 21. Sweeping will start at 6 a.m. that day and conclude at approximately 5 p.m. When possible, please do your best to remove vehicles, trailers, etc from the streets to allow us to clean as effectively as possible.

If you or a loved one are looking for somewhere to go for Thanksgiving Dinner, I was informed that the New Hope Bible Fellowship Church has an open invitation on Thanksgiving Day (November 27) from 12 pm – 3 pm at 5b 2nd South Street. I’ll attach their flyer for this wonderful offering. What an incredible invitation to extend.
Applications for our vacant position of City Clerk were due today by 5 p.m. Early next week I’ll get to work on scheduling interviews. This interview process will be the same as it was for our Chief of Police and Municipal Judge. Both went through a panel interview of a City subcommittee, which then made a recommendation of which (if any) candidate the City Council should appoint to fill the vacancy. These interviews will be conducted by our Administrative Committee, as they are the committee that oversees this departments policies and procedures.
We had a small water break on Sandy Ave. earlier today and public works was able to address it quickly and resolve it. This left a patch of road exposed that will revisit next week to patch.
As you may have seen recently outside of Wells Fargo, we are also actively working to repair sidewalks and curbs that are in desperate need of attention. There are multiple areas of need, including the sidewalk on Charlotte, and we are doing our best to address them as soon as we can while also staying within our means.
Our Yerington Police Department has partnered with other agencies on a grant to provide additional staff and resources to address driving without a seatbelt. This Click It – or – Ticket campaign is funded through December 1.
Please be aware that these grants have very specific goals and opportunities to monitor, but any unsafe driving will be addressed immediately by our officers. They’re not shy, they like saying hello.
Again, this is just a fraction of the activity happening every day at City Hall and YPD. If there’s ever something that you feel needs addressed, or you would like more information regarding something mentioned here, feel free to contact me by email jerryb@yerington.net, or at the office 775-344-0343.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the Small Town Christmas events coming up as well. I’ll attach some information for these events.

Have a wonderful weekend!
