Happy Friday Yerington community!
Before I leave the office today I wanted to share a few more updates that I thought the community would appreciate.
First and foremost, thank you to our Yerington Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s Club and the Mason Valley Fireworks committee for a great 4th of July celebration this past weekend. The hard work by these VOLUNTEERS and the groups that assisted (Mason Valley Fire, Public Works, YPD, LCSO & many many more) created wonderful memories for so many people. Please know it is appreciated.
I also wanted to congratulate our Walker River Little League Seniors baseball team on winning the Nevada State Championship against the teams from Reno/Carson and Las Vegas. This is a huge achievement and these kids and coaches should be very proud. They leave next week to compete against the State Champions from 11 states on the west coast. We wish them well and will be rooting them on. I have no doubts they will represent us well.
Regarding City business, we have an important meeting this Monday, July 14 at 10:00 a.m. Minutes and agendas can always be found here: https://www.yerington.net/minutes-and-agendas .
While all items are important, a few items of note are the appointment to fill a vacant council seat, the appointment of our municipal Judge and acting on our water & sewer fee schedules.

During this past week, our public works staff spent significant time eradicating weeds. As a city, we are also now utilizing student workers as part of the Healthy Communities Coalition program. We’d like to extend our gratitude to Justin Zunida and our friends at HCC for partnering with us on this program. We felt this was a great way to help mentor youth and also improve our city. Two things our staff is passionate about.

As we clean up these weeds and alleyways we are also preparing to spray pre-emergent in order to reduce the need for “heavy lifting” later on. It’s always best to do it once, and do it right.
These efforts began on the south end of town and staff is working northward in an organized manner.

I am aware that there is still much to do, and we will get there. I’d like to recognize Public Works Director Paul Shapiro and his whole staff for their hard work towards improvement.
Paul and his crew, including Frank Ruiz (pictured) and the high school helpers have been prepping some of our parks for fresh paint to be applied next week. If you have questions or concerns about Public Works please feel free to reach out to Mr. Shapiro at: 775-463-3511 or 775-364-8895.
He and his staff are working hard to get our streets and alleys back in good order.

I could go on all night, but if you’ve made it this far, I commend you! Have a great weekend Yerington.
