After more than three decades of dedicated government service, Melanie Young-Pinkerton has come to understand that leadership is as much about listening and adapting as it is about strategy and oversight. Her journey through public service—including roles as State Tax Director and Budget Administrator—was shaped by a deep commitment to accountability, fiscal responsibility, and building stronger communities. Today, that journey continues in a new and fulfilling direction: entrepreneurship and continued civic engagement in the place she proudly calls home—Yerington.

Throughout her 30-plus year career at both the County and State levels, Melanie held numerous leadership positions where she was responsible for managing multibillion-dollar budgets, developing long-term financial strategies, and overseeing operational planning. Her time in public service provided her with firsthand insight into the real-world impact of responsible governance, preparing her for a new challenge in retirement: launching a small business.

Alongside her husband Dennis Pinkerton, she co-founded Two Ranch Hands, a company rooted in tradition and built on the belief that good food brings people together. What began as a creative outlet and a childhood dream quickly evolved into a meaningful venture specializing in small-batch, handcrafted herb and spice mixes—perfect for dressings, marinades, and dips. Designed to enhance everyday meals and foster connection, the products are a celebration of home, flavor, and loved ones.
Two Ranch Hands also offers one-of-a-kind custom wood pieces, from handcrafted cutting boards to personalized serving trays. Each item is individually designed and crafted, ensuring no two are exactly alike. These functional works of art are meant to become lasting staples in the home—bringing loved ones together around the kitchen table and creating memories that endure.

Dennis plays an essential role in the business, bringing both creativity and craftsmanship to their custom butcher block cutting boards, as well as helping guide the brand’s long-term vision. His commitment and work ethic have been instrumental to the company’s growth.

Beyond their shared business, Dennis also serves as Bureau Chief for the State Fire Marshal’s Office and as Vice Chairman of the Mason Valley Fire Protection District, where he plays a key role in guiding emergency services and supporting regional public safety.
Retirement hasn’t slowed Melanie down. She continues to give back to her community through her service on the Board of the Yerington Chamber of Commerce, working alongside fellow local leaders to promote business development, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. Her leadership and collaborative spirit help ensure that Yerington remains a vibrant and supportive environment for local businesses.
She is also a proud member of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization), an organization devoted to advancing educational opportunities for women. Through this work, she helps local women pursue their academic dreams—something she believes is vital for building a stronger future.
Additionally, Melanie volunteers with the First Responders Benefit, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting those who serve and protect the community. Whether advocating for resources or lending a hand at events, she stands firmly behind the individuals who risk their lives to ensure our safety.
The same values that guided her public service career—service, integrity, and community—continue to define her work today. Whether contributing to a nonprofit, supporting local businesses, or building something meaningful with her husband at Two Ranch Hands, Melanie remains committed to making a positive impact wherever she can.
Her story is far from over—and the next chapter is only just beginning.
