For such a relatively small community, Yerington seems to have more than its fair share of creative people. I recently had the pleasure of meeting one such talent.
Yarely Bonilla is a gifted photographer and true local, born and raised right here in Yerington. She went through our local school system but never took photography classes. Her photos reflect such a keen eye for powerful compositions and a natural appreciation of lighting that it is hard to imagine that she never had formal training in art or photography. Instead, her training comes from what she has gathered from the internet and by observing the work of other photographers.

A photographer who has been her inspiration is the legendary Polish pet photographer, Alicja Zmyslowska. A highlight in Yarely’s photography journey was when she had her dog photographed by Alicja. This memorable event took place among the colorful rock formations of Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park. The session had a lasting impression and set the foundation for her own, unique style of environmental pet photography.
In June 2023, we were treated to Yarely’s first photography exhibit at the Jeanne Dini Center. Among the variety of images were landscapes, nature/wildlife, portraits and her favorite subject, her dog Levi…a border Australian Shepherd mix.
Although she loves nature and being outdoors capturing the ever-changing landscapes, she finds it very rewarding when she can bring joy to families through her photography. She says, “Creating personal images that will last a lifetime is something everyone can cherish.” Some of the services she offers include portraits, engagements, maternity, weddings, family, pet, and events.
She uses only the finest professional photography equipment and prefers to work in natural light. Supplemental lighting such as reflectors or electronic flash are used if the situation calls for it.
She sees each day as an opportunity for growth and feels we never stop learning. Her plans for the future include growing her business and traveling. Montana and Wyoming are already on her calendar but at the top of the list is an extended photo tour of Iceland.
