Pizen Switch Times

established 2021

Good evening Yerington Community,

Street Sweeping is scheduled for this Thursday, September 11, 2025. We have contracted help from a company called EPS to come help with the initial sweep to get caught up faster.

As such, we ask that you make every reasonable effort to clear the streets that day to help us get the biggest bang for our buck. I understand that it is impossible to clear the streets completely for over 8 hours. All I ask is that you make a reasonable effort to clear as much as you can. You may also notice flyers (like the photo attached to the post) helping make those aware if they don’t have social media. Flyers will start going out tonight and tomorrow.

That flyer brings me to my next update: Texting alerts. Are you familiar with TextMyGov? This is a feature that we have that enables you to text us directly with concerns, such as cleanups, fallen branches, water leaks, etc. To utilize this service text Hi to (775)452-4982

For any emergency services (fire, medical, police) you still call 911. This in no way replaces that emergency resource.

You can also text YERINGTON to 91896 and be subscribed to alerts from the City of Yerington. That way if we need to send out a mass communication for either road closures, emergencies, etc., we can send it quickly to all subscribers. I strongly encourage you to get signed up today. I’ll attach another photo with instructions.

Today at the regular scheduled City Council meeting, the City Council approved resolution 2025-02, a Declaration of Support to the Sage Crest Revitalization project. Farmy Inc, a non-profit organization is undertaking a project to revitalize the abandoned drive in theater on the outskirts of town. This declaration is to help them with resources to help this project along and potentially increase tourism in Yerington. This declaration of support does not commit any financial resources to the project, in fact as a city, we are unable to make financial commitment to this project, but if there are other reasonable resources we can commit, we intend to do so. I’d like to say thank you to Farmy Inc. for bringing this project forward and I look forward to seeing how we may be of service to it’s success. I’ve attached a wonderful photo taken by local Micah Triplett.

The City Council today, also accepted an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) grant for improvements to our Airport. This improvement is for an upgraded AWOS (Automated Weather Observing Systems). To put it simply, this is an all weather alert system that tells pilots everything about weather, wind direction and speed, dew points and other relevant information that pilots like to know before entering our area and landing/taking off. With the approval today, this allows me to get started (I already have appointments for the next step tomorrow) with implementing these improvements. This is 95% Grant paid, 5% City Airport funds. Airport improvements are critical to attracting economic growth and we are excited for these upgrades.

I also want to mention an update regarding our Chief of Police vacancy. We received 5 applicants and interviews are being conducted later this week. The initial interviews are being completed by our Public Safety Committee, which is a Committee of myself, 2 members of the public, emergency response personnel and 2 sitting council members. This committee will conduct panel interviews with these 5 applicants and decide which candidate to recommend to the City Council for appointment, or possibly, recommend none of the candidates.

The recommendation of the committee will then be placed before the City Council at a public meeting (likely September 22) for consideration. The City Council may then interview the applicants and/or accept/reject the recommendation.

Lastly, I wanted to say thank you to our Public Works Department for their efforts improving the crosswalks, curbs and potholes throughout town. I recognize that we still have much to do, but it’s worth noting the improvements they have made thus far. Potholes are the main focus at this point, as we try to repair as many of the streets as we can while temperatures still allow. Once temperatures start dropping, we have to hold off on further improvements until spring. Our goal is to improve as many of the street surfaces and alleyways as we can before winter weather hits us.

Should you have any questions or concerns about the information above, or anything else regarding city business, please contact me directly.

Have a great week Yerington!
