The City of Yerington was pleased to recognize community members for outstanding contributions to our city.
Public Works Director Paul Shapiro recognized Vanessa Stuart of Animal Rescue Group of Northern Nevada (ARGONN) for her efforts and partnership to spay/neuter and treat feral cats in Yerington (as she does in several communities). Ms. Stuart has been instrumental in coordinating these treatments and releases in an effort to reduce the feral cat population in Yerington. Presenting the certificate to Ms. Stuart and her associates is Mayor John Garry.

Also recognized was Mr. Justin Zuniga, of Healthy Communities Coalition. Through the Comstock Youth Works Program, Mr. Zuniga coordinated with city staff summer help/jobs for these youth to teach critical skills for future employment. Pictured with Mr. Zuniga are several of the students from the Comstock Youth Works Program and Mayor John Garry.

**Community Update**
Also attached you will find three separate public notices of vacancies to fill on city committees.
As a city, we have several committees, each formed with a blend of city staff, elected council members and volunteers from the public. Each committee meets from time to time (typically 2-4 times per year) to discuss items and make recommendations to the City Council for possible adoption.
For example, the Room Tax board (2 vacancies currently) meets twice a year to discuss the disbursement of room tax funds. In each meeting they hear from applicants requesting room tax dollars in support of their event, then make a recommendation to Yerington City Council. As a volunteer member of this panel, you would provide feedback, ask questions and help decide how city funds are utilized on these events.
Other vacancies include a seat on our Public Safety Committee, and two seats on our Public Works Committee.
Our Public Safety committee meets with our Police Department, Fire Chief, City Staff and council members regarding public safety policy, enforcement and strategies to propose for council. Programs like our current K-9 program, started at this committee level.
The Public Works Committee meets with our PW Director, council members and city staff to discuss a wide variety of topics from water/sewer/parks and streets, amongst others.
These committee meetings are opportunities to shape the strategies to fix challenges we’re facing, and implement change and improvement, or in some cases, hold on to what we already do well. If you’re passionate about shaping our community and willing to put in some work, I look forward to seeing your letter of interest. Please refer to the attached notices for specific information.

One last item of note – apparently a glider heard that we are busy organizing our next annual Fly In at the Yerington Airport (scheduled for October 4) and was so excited they decided to make an emergency landing on our runway today!

Staff was quick to respond and lend assistance. The glider was moved from the runway without incident and the crew inside was told they’ll have to wait ’til October 4th for our Fly In, like everybody else.

In all seriousness, there were no injuries, and we are glad everybody is safe and sound.
Have a great weekend everybody,
Jerry Bryant
